Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for a trainee plaster technician to join our Orthopaedic Outpatient Department at the Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust. Our department runs from Pinderfields, Pontefract and Dewsbury hospitals caring for trauma and elective orthopaedic outpatient activity.

The successful applicant will have access to excellent training and professional development opportunities and will be supported and welcomed into our friendly, dynamic and knowledgeable team.

The successful applicant should have knowledge and experience working with trauma and orthopaedic patients and must attend the training courses as required, which will be funded by the trust.

The trainee plaster technician will gain knowledge and experience on the job until September 2023 when the applicant will be enrolled in the British casting course for 12 months. Following this, providing the person specification criteria is met, the candidate will be supported into a permanent role as a band 5 plaster technician.

Whilst undertaking your training, you will be renumerated in accordance with Annex 21, paragraph 3, of Agenda for Change Terms and Conditions . During your training, pay will therefore be adjusted as follows:

  • more than one but less than two years prior to completion of training 70 per cent of the pay band maximum of the qualified rate;
  • up to 12 months prior to completion of training 75 per cent of the pay band maximum of the fully qualified rate.

Main duties of the job

The main duties of the role involve excellent team working, liaising with the multi -disciplinary team to provide a patient centre casting service.

The trainee plaster technician will work towards applying and removing a wide range of plaster cast and orthosis to adults and children in a busy plaster clinic setting and also includes the wards and in theatres.

You will be expected to work both independently and alongside your colleagues to provide the highest standard of care.

Exceptional communication and organisational skills together with a professional attitude are required to lead and motivate the team.
