Job summary

We are looking for an experienced Highly Specialised Clinical Physiologist to cover a period of maternity leave at Pinderfields Hospital, Wakefield.

Our department undertakes a wide range of investigations, with patients of all ages from a variety of specialities and has two dedicated Neurophysiology Consultants. The investigations include routine, ambulatory, sleep deprived and melatonin induced sleep EEGs in the department. We have a busy in-patient workload from the wards including ICU and SCBU, along with an evoked potentials service. Nerve Conduction Studies for the investigation of carpal tunnel syndrome, ulnar and peripheral neuropathies, and EMG are provided by the Consultants and Physiologists.

You will be highly experienced in performing EEG in a wide range of patients, including children and neonates, and EPs and NCS for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. You should hold BSc in Clinical Physiology or Part I ECNE or equivalent and be registered with RCCP.

Attendance at professional meetings is encouraged and personal development is supported.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for a Highly Specialised Physiologist with several years experience in neurophysiology to perform and lead within our friendly team.

The candidate should be competent and confident in performing a range of neurophysiological investigations in dedicated and non- dedicated environments, on both adult and paediatric patients.

We require an individual who is experienced in working independently that can manage and prioritise their own workload, but also work collaboratively with colleagues from a wide range of adjacent specialities.

Excellent communication skills are essential as this role requires a person that is able to obtain the trust and cooperation of children and adults in order to deliver quality recordings.

The successful candidate will participate in audit, research and development, along with the training and education of junior and other staff groups.

Clinically lead in the provision of a Neurophysiology Service. Providing diagnostic tests such as EEGs, Evoked Potentials and Nerve Conduction Studies to both outpatients and inpatients.

Undertake training of junior members of staff and other visitors to the department.

Regularly participate in research projects within the department.

Take responsibility for data management on the departmental computer systems.

To undertake appropriate administrative tasks related to the role.

Clinical

Monitor and maintain a high professional standard of service to patients.

Promote the comfort and wellbeing of adults and children being monitored. This includes assisting patients in cases of vomiting or bleeding from test sites where the insertion of needles is required.

Follow the appropriate infection control procedures when dealing with sharps and body fluids.

To explain to patients the nature of the testing process including those of an invasive nature and deal sensitively with patients who become distressed.

To plan, perform, analyse, interpret and report on a range of tests including those of a highly complex nature to a high level of competence including:

- Electroencephalographic investigations using current standard techniques without supervision.

- Emergency electroencephalographic investigations in areas such as ITU and SCBU.

- Electroencephalographic investigations using special techniques.

- Activated recordings, recordings following sleep deprivation, recordings during administration of medicine e.g. diazepam or pyridoxine.

- Long term EEG and video EEG monitoring along with the appropriate action required.

- Nerve conduction studies for Carpal Tunnel syndrome.

- Assist with Electromyographic examinations, nerve conduction studies and magnetic simulation studies.

- Modality evoked potentials taking appropriate action where necessary.

To work collaboratively with other professionals and agencies to ensure services meet changing health needs.

To deal with difficult and conflicting situations including those that are of a clinical/professional nature.

Assist in developing and implementing policies to improve the service for both patients and health professionals accessing the service.

To show flexibility in daily work to deliver the clinical needs of the department.

Participate in and make provision for research and development programmes as directed.

To maintain Continuous Professional Development appropriate to the range of Neurophysiology services to patients.

Perform tests on all types of patients that the trust requires, this may include NHS, Private or other Trusts etc.

To undertake cleaning and maintenance of equipment as well as basic fault finding including reporting any faults or problems with the equipment used in any part of the service to the HSCPN.

To display a high degree of precision and hand eye co-ordination.

Frequently deal with sensitive patients suffering from certain neurological and psychiatric conditions. The ability to deal with difficult situations and challenging behaviour will also be required.
