Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Medical Physics Department for an Apprentice Clinical Engineer at The Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust.

To be eligible for a funded apprenticeship, you must be over the age of 16, a resident in the UK for the last 3 years and you must not hold a level 3 qualification (or above) or an NVQ Level 2 qualification in the same pathway or subject, e.g., BTEC or GCSE.

The duration of this apprenticeship programme will be 2 years and you will achieve a BTEC Healthcare Science Level 4 in Medical Engineering. Completion will enable the individual to join the Academy for Health Care Scientists accredited Associate Register at Level 4.

This is a full time position, 37.5 hours per week, working on Monday to Friday from 08.30am to 16.30pm, shift may change when it is required.

** Please note that the pay scale will be as follows. Pay is determined as a percentage of the pay for qualified staff. You will be remunerated in accordance with Annex 21 Agenda for Change.**

Main duties of the job

Work as part of a team within the Trust in the servicing of a wide variety of medical equipment ensuring all medical equipment operates effectively and safely with a minimum of downtime.

The post holder will as a trainee develop the skills to carry out routine and scheduled servicing, calibration, safety and acceptance testing on a wide range of medical equipment.

Responsible for maintaining an accurate medical equipment database by recording own work and ensuring equipment service history is kept up to date.

  • To work as part of a team responsible for the repair and maintenance of a wide range of medical equipment.
  • Attend mandatory block weeks for the Medical Engineering Apprenticeship programme at Avensys, Dudley.
  • Make a commitment to study both within working hours and at home during the duration of the apprenticeship course.
  • To carry out work as allocated by the Team Leader / mentor in the areas as appropriate within the abilities of the post and the range of services provided.
  • Develop skills to undertake fault finding, apply suitable fault finding techniques to diagnose problems and seek assistance from peers in order to rectify faults.
  • Carry out calibration, quality control, safety and acceptance testing.
  • The post holder will be required to work independently at times and be responsible for their own record keeping required to fulfil the duties and responsibilities of the post.
  • To become familiar with the departments relevant statutory requirements, the clinical governance, risk management and quality audit policies and procedures of the Trust and the system(s) of accreditation in use.
  • As part of the Departments commitment to meeting the needs and requirements of our service users you will be required to work across the sites.
  • Communicate with all levels in the Medical Physics department and other wards and departments both verbally and in writing.
  • To update and maintain accurately the medical equipment database.
  • To comply with the requirements of ISO:9001:2000 and ensure the Q-Pulse quality management system and all procedures and protocols are adhered to.
  • Liaise with external companies to obtain information where required to effectively maintain equipment. To identify areas and particular projects where there is the potential for improvement of quality to the benefit of the service provided by Medical Physics.
  • To provide cover, when requested by the Head of Medical Devices or the Service Manager in other areas of Medical Physics services commensurate with the grade, qualifications, experience and training.
  • To participate in the in-house and external training courses as identified by the post holder or team leader. The decision on which courses to attend will be taken on the basis of service needs.
  • Liaise with companies during trials and implementation of new equipment obtaining appropriate documentation to ensure patient safety is always maintained.
  • To drive a range of Trust vehicles in a safe and responsible manner adhering to all traffic and other legal regulations, subject to appropriate licence holding.
  • To undertake any other reasonable duties consistent with the grade as indicated by the Services Managers.
