Job summary

Applications are invited for the post of Apprentice Radiographer. We are looking for forward thinking and enthusiastic Apprentice Radiographer who want to join our existing team of dedicated Radiographers and Assistant Practitioner Radiographers.

Successful candidates will be expected to complete; work-based, online, self-directed learning as outlined in the university prospectus. This is initially a fixed term contract for the duration of the apprenticeship with milestones set. All course fees will be paid for by the Trust. The apprentice will achieve a Degree in BSc (hons) Diagnostic Radiography Apprenticeship Degree.

Applicants must be eligible and willing to undertake a Level 6 Degree Apprenticeship and hold Certificates or Diplomas of Higher Education (Cert HE; Dip HE), Foundation Degrees (FD) or equivalent and Level 3 qualifications or equivalent to meet HEI entry requirements.

There is an eligibility criteria for government funded apprenticeships which requires the applicant to be aged 16+, be a resident in the UK/EU for the last three years. Applicants cannot have achieved a qualification at level 6 or above in the same pathway as this will exempt them from being able to undertake the apprenticeship.

Candidates applying must have the required qualifications as documented in the personal specification. Furthermore, an expectation from the prospect degree apprentice of enthusiasm, commitment and pro-activeness is essential.

Main duties of the job

To work as a member of the radiography team responsible for producing high quality images within the radiology service.

The post holder will be working towards this job description whilst undertaking a training scheme over 36 months, under supervision, to achieve a BSc (hons) Diagnostic Radiography Apprenticeship Degree.

Apprentices will be workplace based for four days (30 hours) per week and 1 day (7.5 hours) will be protected study time either locally or at the associated Higher Education Institution (HEI). Attendance of training at the associated HEI is considered to be essential and annual leave must be arranged outside these sessions.

The post holder will fulfil all tasks and work as part of a team responsible for providing an efficient imaging service in the Diagnostic Imaging Department. To meet the needs of the service, the post holder may be required to work in other areas and hospitals as appropriate, as directed by the line manager. It may be necessary to attend other Imaging Departments to gain sufficient experience in some modalities.

  • Be able to plan and successfully undertake the academic components of the Diagnostic Radiographer Apprenticeship course whilst continuing to achieve clinical competencies.
  • To plan and undertake continued studies both in the workplace and at home.
  • To work as part of a team responsible for providing an efficient imaging service at Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust
  • Attend mandatory block weeks for the Diagnostic Radiographer Apprenticeship programme at the University of Sheffield.
  • Make a commitment to study both within working hours and at home during the duration of the apprenticeship course.
  • Attend virtual tutorials and webinars and complete all e-learning as instructed by the University of Sheffield
  • Attend tutorials, teaching and CPD events arranged by the Diagnostic Imaging Department as instructed by the Advanced Practitioner

  • To immediately report any fault errors following departmental processes and highlight to the supervising radiographer.
  • To communicate effectively with patients and carers of varying abilities and understanding; explaining procedures in order to gain co-operation.
  • To re-assure and encourage patients and carers.
  • To liaise with multidisciplinary teams regarding examination needs and results.
  • To build and maintain good relationships within the team and other departments and disciplines; working together to develop service improvements.
  • To ensure the safe use of x-ray and associated equipment.
  • To report equipment malfunctions to senior staff and to help maintain comprehensive and accurate records of faults; ensuring that staff are kept up to date as to the working status of equipment.
  • To input, store and provide patient information on the directorate Radiology Information System maintaining the integrity and quality of the data consistent with legislation, policies and procedures.
  • Prioritise own tasks under the appropriate delegation of the registered practitioner.
  • To actively participate in departmental meetings.

  • DMM BTEC in a science/healthcare subject)
