Registered Nurse

An amazing opportunity has arisen for a Registered Nurse/Midwife/Paediatric Nurse to join the Neonatal team at Pinderfields Hospital, to provide 24-hour care for premature and ill newborn infants.

We are a Level two Local Neonatal Unit, with 3 Intensive care cot's, 4 high dependency cot's,15 special care cot's and a 5 bedded Transitional Care Unit.

The successful candidate will be committed to providing high quality care to our babies and our families.

We have an ongoing commitment to enhancing practice and staff development with a Clinical Education team to support learning.

Main duties of the job

The neonatal nurses are responsible for caring for newborn babies who are premature or sick.

Empower parents through education and support to undertake the care of their baby.

Record observations and document a baby's care

Prepare and administer medications

Initiate appropriate basic resuscitation in an emergency situation.

Work closely with all members of the Neonatal team.

Job Purpose

In accordance with agreed policies/guidelines, the post holder is required to provide evidence based neonatal care of the highest standards to ensure the best possible outcome for each baby and his/her family.

Key Responsibilities

To provide and be responsible for the assessment of care needs, the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care for a number of babies requiring intensive, high dependency and special care, as allocated by the Nurse in Charge.

To carry out all of relevant forms of care competently and without direct supervision.

To communicate with parents, carers and families about both the sensitive and complex requirements and the routine care required by the neonate using developed interpersonal and communication skills, utilising the skills of other members of the multi-professional team, as appropriate. Ensure confidentiality is maintained at all times.

Demonstrate own duties to learners and new starters and act as an Assessor/Preceptor to these staff.

Maintain accurate written and electronic records in accordance with Trust andNMC regulations.

To demonstrate competency in the safe and appropriate use of equipment within the Unit, the recognising and reporting of faults and the requirements for dismantling/cleaning such equipment after use.

Admit, transfer and discharge neonates according to working practice, Trust and Unit policies and procedures.

Maintain competency in intravenous administration, adhering to Trust policies relating to medicine management, health and safety and infection control.

Prepare and receive reports from staff which demonstrate good communication and working relationships.

Maintain and enhance skills in neonatal resuscitation. Ensure competency is maintained with attendance at Trust and Neonatal Life Support training.

Resources and Finance

The post holder will ensure the proper use of the Trusts resources such as stationery, telephone usage, photocopying and other consumables in the course of business, ensuring minimal waste and minimal cost.

Organisational Responsibilities

To maintain the confidentiality of the Trust in respect of patient and staff information obtained at all times and use such information only as authorised for specific purposes. Report any concerns about the use of such information to the senior manager.

Personal Responsibilities

The post-holder is responsible for taking reasonable care with regard to himself/herself as well as for any colleagues, patients or visitors who might be affected by any act or failure to act by the post-holder in accordance with the Trusts policies on Health and Safety at Work.

To report any accident, untoward incident or loss relating to staff, patients or visitors according to Trust policies.

To undertake in-service training relevant to the post.

Comply with Trust Policies and Procedures.

Area of work

The post holder will be required to undertake training events at any site across the trust.

The post holder may be required to work on other wards/ department within the Trust at short notice to cover unplanned sickness or to cover planned sickness or annual leave on other departments

The post holder will be required to undertake mandatory training and is responsible for keeping this training up to date

The post holder will have an appraisal of performance each year and will be responsible for agreeing a development plan in line with the Trusts (KSF)

Knowledge & Skill Framework, in agreement with their manager or immediatesupervisor. The development plan will be reviewed each year

The Trust will provide assistance and agreed development to enable the postholder to achieve their objectives and standards in line with the development plan

If the post holder feels he/she is not achieving their objective as agreed in the development plan they will bring it to the attention of their supervisor or manager at the earliest opportunity

Health and Safety
