Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for 2 Trainee Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNS) for Colposcopy, full time positions within the Gynaecology outpatient team at MidYorkshire NHS Teaching Trust.

The successful candidates will work closely with the Lead Consultant and the multi disciplinary team on both the Pontefract and Dewsbury sites.

The individuals will undertake the recognised BSCCP colposcopy course developing the skills and knowledge to become an autonomous practitioner undertaking nurse-led colposcopy clinics to ensure all women requiring colposcopy, biopsy and treatment procedures experience an efficient, quality service whilst demonstrating a supportive, sensitive and approachable manner.

The individuals will be supported by the CNS for colposcopy and medical colposcopists.Our ideal candidates will have initiative and drive and the ability to work well both independently and as part of a team. Main duties of the job

Provide an evidence-based specialist nursing service, which is responsive to users needs, to a cohort of patients referred to the specialist service/MDT

Work clinically for 80% of the role demonstrating advanced practice skills in the holistic assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care for the cohort of patients within the specialist service

Manage a cohort of patients and prioritise workload to meet patient and service need

Undertake clinical competencies relevant to this specialist service to demonstrate expertise in extended nursing roles

Facilitate and co-ordinate the process of informed choice for patients in the provision of treatment and care

Act as a patient advocate to guide treatment and care decisions to ensure that patients individual needs are expressed and valued

Advise on the complex disease and symptom management for patients within the speciality

Act as a resource for health care professionals

Work autonomously in the development and delivery of nurse led or parallel clinics

Co-ordinate the patient care pathway

Demonstrate advanced empathetic interpersonal and communication skills

Effectively and sensitively communicate highly complex and sensitive information

Job responsibilities

Provide an evidence-based specialist nursing service, which is responsive to users needs, to a cohort of patients referred to the specialist service/MDT. Act as a resource for health care professionals working within the Trust and primary care, providing specialist professional advice and support.

Work autonomously in the development and delivery of nurse led or parallel clinics in line with National guidance and local service need.

Co-ordinate the patient care pathway, ensuring timely referrals are made to members of the multidisciplinary and treatment teams. This will include receiving direct referrals to the specialist nursing service from medical and nursing staff within the Trust and in primary care.

Demonstrate advanced empathetic interpersonal and communication skills in supporting, informing and advising patients and carers through diagnosis, treatment, disease progression, prognosis and supportive and palliative care where applicable. This will involve frequently imparting significant news or supporting patients and carers during and following such consultations.

Effectively and sensitively communicate highly complex and sensitive information to emotionally distressed patients and family/carers at key points in the care pathway on a frequent basis.

Use advanced communication skills to provide verbal and written information to patients and their families/carers, in a timely manner specific to their individual needs.

As a core member of the Multidisciplinary provide professional advice to patients, relatives, primary care staff, junior medical and nursing staff, and other outside agencies and liase with medical clinicians, laboratory staff, administrative and clerical staff and cancer services.

Refer to other health professionals and outside agencies to ensure optimum care and ongoing support for individual patients/carers, and to ensure the seamless transition from primary to secondary care appropriate to patients individual needs and circumstance.
