The Maternity Team at Mid Yorkshire Hospital Trust are seeking a senior midwife skilled in supporting excellence in care through periods of change

Based on our Labour Ward, this post is suitable for a midwife with demonstrable experience of service improvement and governance.

The right candidate will act as an excellent role model to all staff, providing a combination of strong clinical leadership, expert midwifery practice and the enthusiasm and drive required to ensure that all women and families receive kind, compassionate and personalised care.

Above all we are looking for someone with the ability to lead and inspire whilst sharing our vision of providing continuity of care to all women who access our service.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will take responsibility for the shift management and clinical leadership of the midwifery service. They will be expected to ensure high standards of maternity care through effective management of staff by leading the team, organizing others in their actions and setting priorities. They will be an effective team player, leader and builder.

They will liaise with and collaborate across the maternity service to ensure a seamless service that provides personalised and women-centered care and will undertake the role of Senior Clinical Midwife (Labour Ward Coordinator) for the Maternity service out of hours.

They will assess the full range of care needs and develop, implement and evaluate provision of care throughout the childbirth continuum for women and their babies and escalate concerns to the relevant professional.

They will assist with management of staff on the unit and contribute to the delivery of the maternity unit objectives in line with the Trust Maternity Strategy Towards Excellence

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To take responsibility for the day to day running of Labour Ward.
  • Ensure delivery of safe and effective care across the maternity unit through effective management of staff and resources across the unit.
  • Act as a visible leader within the Maternity Unit and undertake the role of Senior Clinical Midwife for the maternity unit out of hours.
  • Maintain a safe and clean environment for staff and service users by ensuring compliance with legislation, polices, protocols including health and safety, healthcare associated infection, risk management and critical incident reporting.

  • Promote a positive professional attitude for the profession and the Trust at all times.
  • Maintain staff morale and good working relationships.
  • Communicate effectively with multi-disciplinary professionals and agencies, ensuring seamless care at a high standard.
  • Ensure that a high level of safe care is delivered to women and their babies whilst adhering to obstetric guidance and care plans by providing specialist midwifery expertise and ensuring that all staff are supported in their practice on a continual basis.
  • Ensure the dignity, respect and privacy of all women being cared for on Labour Ward is maintained at all times.
  • Ensure that Maternity Service Guidelines are implemented and monitored in accordance with the Trust and NMC Guidance.

  • Be an expert in all midwifery and clinical competencies including normalising birth across the risk continuum, water births, bereavement care, obstetric emergencies, perineal suturing, epidural analgesia, intravenous cannulation, adult and neonatal resuscitation, scrubbing for theatre and post-operative recovery. Be able to demonstrate, supervise and support other midwives and maternity support workers in these skills.
  • Support the clinical expertise of midwives within the Maternity Unit by role modelling evidence based care and personalised, women-centred care.
  • Demonstrate overt professional leadership and clinical expertise and foster a culture where all staff can develop their clinical expertise and confidence and feel valued.
  • To work with the Labour Ward Manager wand Matron to share and drive innovation within the workforce and maternity service.
  • To act as an advocate for women, and in line with the National Maternity Review ensure that every woman has personalised care that is centered on their individual needs and circumstances.
  • With the introduction of the Continuity of Carer pathway act as the contact for the community and continuity midwives during out of hours home births and provide advice and support as required when they practice on the maternity unit.
  • Actively support and provide a link between labour ward and continuity of carer teams.
  • Ensure that initial appropriate care/ remedial action is taken to ensure safety of women and staff and actions are clearly documented and escalated in the most relevant appropriate manner.
  • Anticipate potential problems and develop contingency plans to resolve or effectively manage these situations.
  • Maintain accurate management records at all times, ensuring appropriate reporting mechanisms are used.
  • Coordinate and liaise with multidisciplinary agencies to provide care to women and their families with additional needs, for e.g. psychiatric, social problems, child protection, disability etc.
  • Ensure bereaved women and their relatives are supported and receive appropriate care, whilst ensuring other staff are supported during this process.
  • Be professionally accountable for own midwifery practice, acting in a professional manner at all times abiding by the NMC Code and all other relevant NMC and the Trusts values, policies and guidelines.
  • Be responsible for the annual appraisal and performance review of an identified group of colleagues.

HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

  • To participate in the selection, interviewing and induction of new members of staff.

  • To be responsible for the maintenance of day to day performance, conduct and behaviour of the unit team
  • Be responsible for the annual appraisal performance review of an identified group of staff
  • Ensure that where performance or conduct issues are identified escalation is made to the ward manager
  • To identify, minimise and act upon risks to service users and staff
  • To make the Ward Manager aware of all hazards / unsafe practices and ensure all accidents / untoward incidents are recorded in accordance with Trust policy.

  • To ensure processes are adhered to when managing sickness

EDUCATION AND TRAINING

  • To ensure that you continually support the education and development of all staff and students that work within the maternity service and on Labour Ward.
  • Participate in training related to area of expertise (for example PROMPT, Perineal Suturing, fetal heart rate monitoring).
  • Support staff in completion of statutory learning and study days.
  • Ensure up to date with new evidence and changes within the service both on a local and national level.

RISK MANAGEMENT

  • Report any incidents via the DATIX system and to alert the Ward Manager and Risk Management team of incidents
  • Participate in investigations of incidents and feedback to staff involved by way of reviewing DATIX reports, auditing and review patient notes. This includes investigations into serious incidents.

EQUIPMENT

  • Ensure all equipment has been regularly maintained.
  • Ensure all equipment is used in accordance with the manufacturers instructions
  • Ensure any equipment found to be faulty/unsafe should be removed from use and reported to the appropriate authority
