Main duties of the job

To ensure that the Trust has in place standards for undergraduates and postgraduate medical education across all its sites, ensuring accreditation of all relevant posts.

To ensure the development of suitable learning environment and ensuring that the right people are in place to support undergraduate and postgraduate learning.

To support the Trusts strategic objectives and contribute to its broader education strategy including facilitation of multi-professional learning.

To chair the Trusts Medical Education Committee.

To attend the Clinical Forum and other appropriate governance forums as required to appraise the Medical Director, Divisional Clinical Directors and Heads of Clinical Service of issues in Medical Education.

To participate in other meetings as required representing medical education.

To ensure the Trust delivers its HEE contract, including the quality standards required by that contract, providing a focus and leadership for medical education developments within the Trust.

To be responsible for the activities of the locally based medical postgraduate education team.

To work with, supervise and mentor college/locality tutors in the Trust

To ensure that the planning for and actions arising from college visits is robustly managed.

Job Purpose:

The Director of Medical Education (DME) will provide leadership, strategic direction and vision for the assurance, management and delivery of postgraduate and undergraduate medical education in the Trust. They are responsible for the quality of the learning environment within the Trust provided for medical students and doctors in training.

The DME will work with the Medical Director, Associate Director Medical Directorate and the Director of Workforce and OD as executive lead for education to develop effective medical workforce plans and to ensure the smooth running of the education centres in the Trust.

The DME in partnership with the Associate Director Medical Directorate will oversee the appropriate and transparent use of the educational tariff received by the Trust for undergraduate and postgraduate medical and dental education, working with others to promote inter-professional education across all healthcare learner disciplines.

College tutors will be accountable to the DME for delivery in their areas.

To ensure that the standards required by the General Medical Council are met for those undertaking their foundation training within the Trust including support and appropriate education programmes.

To collaborate with the General Practice Tutors and GP Training Programme Directors so as to ensure that GP trainees offer educational programmes and support which satisfy the requirements of the Dean of Postgraduate General Practice Education.

To support the provision of excellent placement programmes for undergraduate medical students.

To plan and provide educational programmes (in consultation with college specialty tutors appointed by the Royal Colleges and Faculties consultant staff and junior doctors).

To work with the Medical Director and Divisional colleagues to ensure the delivery of appropriate induction procedures and programmes for doctors in training.

To work closely with the Matron for Medical Education to monitor and support the wellbeing of medical students and doctors in training

To ensure the delivery of high-quality educational supervision through the development and delivery of the Excellence in Supervision programme.

To support the Medical Director and Chief Executive to deliver the Trusts aspirations to become a Teaching Trust and then a University Trust.

To work in partnership with the Associate Director Medical Directorate and the Medical Education Manager to manage the budget ensuring that appropriate systems are in place to identify and control income and expenditure including the allocation of study leave funds for doctors in training).

To work with Trust finance staff to ensure that expenditure against the budget can be fully and clearly accounted for.

To oversee the management of medical learners who are involved in serious incidents (SI), complaints, conduct and capability investigations to ensure there are appropriate support mechanisms in place and there is an effective reporting structure to inform the learners responsible officer as appropriate.

To assure there is a robust system in place for supporting trainees requiring additional support and signposting them to local and regional support mechanisms.

To be an active member of NACT UK including attending NACT UK medical education leadership development courses and raising concerns and proposals for improving education through the regional NACT Council representatives.

To remain up to date with modern concepts of healthcare educational leadership and innovations in medical education, undertaking training to meet any learning needs identified

Support for the role

The post holder will be supported by a Deputy Director of Medical Education, the Associate Director Medical Directorate, Medical Education Manager and the wider Medical Education Team.

The post holder will be supported with professional leave and expenses to cover the additional costs incurred in attending regional and national meetings whilst undertaking this role.

Tenure & Remuneration

The post will be appointed to as a permanent post attracting a 4 PA allocation and Responsibility Payment of £15k. It is intended that these programmed activities will be delivered within core working hours and be fixed in time and place. If taking this role alongside another clinical role the successful post holder will be expected to hold a job plan of not more than 12 PA unless explicitly agreed with the Medical Director.

The appointment is subject to annual appraisal and review by the Medical Director and Postgraduate Dean (or nominated representative) and can be terminated with normal contractual notice.
