These posts are not recognised UK training posts. Nevertheless, these posts have a named supervisor and individuals will be supported in undertaking scheduled educational opportunities to consolidate and develop alongside their experiential learning, with certificated outcomes or credentialing to support career progression through other routes.

An Introduction to the Division/Specialty from Dr Richard Gorman

The Emergency Medicine Service is delivered on two sites within the Trust with the Pinderfields hospital site designated as a Major Trauma Unit, Dewsbury is a local ED and Pontefract was one of the first Urgent Treatment Centres in England. Our multi-disciplinary team of dedicated and committed professionals provide high quality care and treatment in what is, when combined across the three hospitals, consistently ranked as one of the top ten busiest Urgent and Emergency Medicine services in England handling in excess of 270,000 attendances each year.

Main duties of the job

Provision of care with responsibility for the management of patients presenting to the ED including appropriate discharge / admission planning.

In conjunction with senior colleagues to provide a full role in the provision of an out of hours emergency service. Although post holders may not have the initial competencies to manage independently it is expected that during the placement they will develop to take on this role

Referral of patients to other specialities as appropriate

Involvement in specialty and cross-specialty multi-disciplinary teams and meetings

Involvement in relevant administration duties

Teaching and supervision of junior medical staff and other clinicians as appropriate

Active involvement in audit and clinical governance including service improvement activities

This post is offered on a full time 10 Programmed Activity basis , 9 Direct Clinical Care Programmed Activities (DCC PA) and 1 core Supporting Professional Activities Programmed Activities (SPA PA) additional DCC and SPA PAs are negotiable pending discussion.

Duties will be based primarily on our 2 Emergency Departments (EDs) based at Wakefield (Pinderfields) and Dewsbury. We also run an Urgent Treatment Centre at Pontefract. All our medical staff may be required to deliver care to patients on all 3 sites.

From a clinical perspective these posts will participate in the cross-site Tier 2 rota which supports provision of 24-hour Emergency Medicine cover. The 9 DCC PA will be expected to be worked across the full shift pattern including standard days, twilights and night shifts.

  • General medical procedures/skills required of ED middle grade
  • Ability and willingness to supervise and teach junior doctors, nursing staff, medical students & visiting pre-hospital colleagues
