Job summary

Our haematology team is made up of a wide range of enthusiastic and passionate individuals which includes 7 consultants (including this post), 3 specialist registrars, 3 clinical nurse specialists, Advanced Clinical Practitioner and a Physicians Associate. The team provides clinical and laboratory haematology services across the Mid-Yorkshire Teaching Trust which has a catchment population of just under 600,000 across 3 hospital sites. This appointment is a replacement post joining the well-established team. The Trust is a Teaching Hospital offering the potential for honorary academic positions and sub-speciality interests. We have close links with regional academic institutions and a strong record in clinical research alongside a new clinical research and innovation facility opening with the move to full Teaching Hospital status. Haematology in-patient care is centralized onto the modern central Pinderfields site. We operate a level 3 BCSH service with autologous stem cell transplantation and independent stem cell harvesting provision (JACIE and HTA accredited). Haematology is supported by the large Trust Research Team with dedicated haematology nursing staff who support the weekly MDT and ward rounds alongside team meetings to plan trial activity. There are outpatient clinics held on all 2 hospital sites supported by chemotherapy day units. The Laboratory services have full national accreditation.

Main duties of the job

The main duties of the post will include:

This post holder will be based at Pinderfields, and along with colleagues will provide Haematology OPD clinics, support to the chemotherapy daycase units and in-patient ward. The post-holder will be expected to join the trust intra-thecal chemotherapy register and help deliver intra-thecal treatments.

The post holder will be required to attend the other hospital sites to support out- patient clinics, day case work and on occasions other duties as requested by senior colleagues. There will be the opportunity to develop sub-specialty areas according to the experience and interests of individuals and take an active research role/further develop departmental research depending on the candidates wishes.

Duties will be based primarily on our Wakefield (Pinderfields) site although all our medical staff are involved in delivering care to patients on all our sites.

The role of Laboratory lead is already taken but all consultant team members contribute with blood film and bone marrow review (although all marrows are formally reported at the haematological malignancy diagnostic service (HMDS) in Leeds), support to the BMS led anticoagulation dosing service and blood transfusion dept. We run a weekly MDT, monthly transplant meeting /MDT and clinic with representation from the Leeds NHSBT and the Regional Transplant Director, which the post holder will have the opportunity to contribute. We also run regular Quality meetings and have a dedicated haematology/transplant quality management team.

Urgent and Emergency Care duties including out-of-hours on-call; schedules will take due account of the provisions of working time regulations and safe working

On-call duties are currently shared with 6 other colleagues on a {1:6}, currently assessed as 0.886 Category A 5% PA

Supporting Professional Activities in accordance with the Trust Framework, with at least a minimum of 1.5 SPAs included in the core 10PA timetable. Additional SPA or DCC time may be commissioned in line with the skills of the successful candidate and changing requirements of the service.

Examples may include formal teaching responsibilities or departmental leadership roles
