Job summary

We are delighted to be able to advertise a full-time permanent Band 7 Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist Lower Limb Rehabilitation post within the MSK Outpatients Therapies service at Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust. This highly specialist post will initially be based predominantly at Pontefract Hospital but will involve working Trust wide.

We are looking for a highly motivated, hardworking and innovative Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist with specialist experience in the delivery of lower limb rehabilitation. The candidate should have a specialist interest in trauma and orthopaedics, with exceptional knowledge and skills in the assessment and management of acute injuries.

The role will assume that of senior specialist physiotherapist in Lower Limb Rehabilitation, having overall responsibility for the clinical delivery of lower limb physiotherapy in partnership with other members of the team (service lead, team leaders, clinical specialists and advanced practitioners) across the trust within this specialist area, ensuring parity of pathways and services cross site.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be responsible for the clinical management of the lower limb physiotherapy service and be expected to manage the day-to-day organisation of the gym, including assisting/deputising for the team leader where appropriate.

You will be expected to coordinate Physiotherapy input to patients referred into the Mid Yorkshire Teaching hospitals lower limb Physiotherapy service. This will include hip, knee, foot, ankle, trauma, multi trauma and elective Orthopaedics. You will carry a complex clinical caseload including assessment, management, and rehabilitation of a variety of acute and chronic lower limb presentations. This will include ensuring patients are able to return to function, employment, and sport.

You would have the opportunity to work with Advanced Physiotherapy Practitioners on competencies required to deliver an extended scope Physiotherapy role in an orthopaedic lower limb clinic alongside consultants and/or APPs dependent upon skills, training level and service requirements.

You would also be required to provide highly specialist, evidence-based advice, teaching and supervision to members of the Physiotherapy team, including the wider lower limb team and other colleagues as appropriate.

The role will be important in driving active participation in audit and research within the Physiotherapy team to ensure services provide the best possible outcomes for patients.

Clinical Duties

  • Assess capacity, gain valid informed consent and have the ability to work within a legal framework with patients who may lack capacity to consent to treatment.
  • Participate in appropriate on call rota as required.

Clinical Practice

  • To coordinate Physiotherapy input to patients referred into the Mid Yorkshire Teaching hospitals lower limb service. Referrals are accepted from GP, ED, and Orthopaedic teams both within and outside of the Mid Yorkshire area. This will include hip, knee, foot, ankle, trauma, multi trauma and elective Orthopaedics.
  • To take a lead role in the delivery of an effective, evidenced based Physiotherapy service for those with lower limb musculoskeletal conditions working alongside Advanced Physiotherapy Practitioners within this speciality and the wider lower limb team.
  • To carry a complex clinical caseload including assessment, management, and rehabilitation of a variety of acute and chronic presentations. This will include ensuring patients are able to return to function, employment, and sport.
  • To monitor and develop clinical pathways between the in-patient elective orthopaedic and trauma service and cross site outpatient Physiotherapy services to ensure continuity of care.
  • To work alongside Advanced Physiotherapy Practitioners to ensure highly specialist and evidence-based rehabilitation classes and 1:1 sessions for lower limb patients within this speciality to ensure the best possible outcome for patients.
  • To work with Advanced Physiotherapy Practitioners on competencies required to deliver an extended scope Physiotherapy role in an elective orthopaedic lower limb clinic alongside consultants and/or APPs dependent upon skills, training level and service requirements.
