Job summary
An opportunity has arisen for a band 2 sighted support
worker to work alongside an Occupational Therapist who has no sight. Working 18
hours a week over three days.
The job will entail working with the OT in the triage team
at social care direct which is the single point of access for Wakefield social
services.
Main duties of the job
To provide comprehensive
admin and general support for a severely sight impaired worker in the
Community Occupational Therapy service. This post is based in Local Authority
offices,temporarilylocated in the Civic Centre in Castleford but may be relocated.
The support worker will be accessing information form computer systems to support the OT to gain more information about what the referrer is requesting and where the referral needs signposting onto. The support worker will then enter the information onto the system sending the referral to the appropriate team.
The support worker will also support the OT to complete her mandatory training.
When in the office the support worker will need to collect the OT from the taxi outside the building and guide her into the building using a wheelchair and to her desk. Taking the OT back to the transport at night to make sure is safely in taxi.
The support worker will need to assist the OT to orientate around the office to access different areas, and will support with drinks and collection of food when necessary as well as assisting to and from the disabled toiletin their wheelchair. No personal care is required.
The support worker will also be required to support OT to evacuate the building in an emergency using the four flights of stairs.
Annual leave needs to be negotiated between the OT and the support worker so they can take the majority of their annual leave at the same time.
Mandatory training and supervision will be provided.

To promote effective communication with department and other staff. To promote effective communication with service users either by telephone or by post as deemed necessary.
To have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office packages and computer keyboard skills
Take telephone calls and pass messages to workers in a timely manner.
To use the Councils IT system to record the records of service users or update them on behalf of the visually impaired worker as directed.
To assist with the confidential management of service user records and ensure that all documentation is returned to the appropriate department is accurately complete and promptly dispatched. To ensure all service users records are held according to the Councils Electronic Policy.
To be responsible for timely storing of e.g. investigation reports & Letters in the agreed protocol of the Council on the IT system.
To ensure the well-being of the visually impaired worker with support to get into and around the premises safely, to ensure the worker has access to drinks and food and to escort the worker to any meetings in the work location and minute these meetings for the worker.
Receive, sort and distribute goods and post delivered to the department. To organise post for service users as required and directed by the visually impaired worker.
Attend regular departmental meetings when on duty. Attendance at least half of the meetings each year is an expectation.
To support the visually impaired worker to attend and maintain any of their development needs for training and their appraisal. Also to support the use of electronic leave requesting and the monitoring of this.
