Exciting Opportunity: Apprentice Decontamination Service Technicians An excellent opportunity has arisen to join the Decontamination Services Department at Pinderfields Hospital as an Apprentice Decontamination Service Technician. This role provides hands-on training and professional development within a vital area of healthcare. As an Apprentice Technician, you will play an essential role in supporting the delivery of high-quality, sterile medical equipment that is critical for safe and effective patient care. To be eligible for a funded apprenticeship, applicants must: Be aged 16 or over Have lived in the UK for the past 3 years Not already hold a Level 3 qualification or higher Not hold an NVQ Level 2 in the same subject area (e.g., BTEC or GCSE in a related pathway) The duration of this apprenticeship programme will be 12 to 18 months and you will achieve a Level 2 Diploma in Healthcare Science. This qualification will be administered through satisfactory attendance with the registered provider and satisfactory completion of all programme elements. This is a full time position, working 37.5 hours per week. Some shift work may be required. Apprentice pay is dependent on age. If the Band 3 pay reduction while training drops below the National Minimum Wage, the following hourly rates will apply: Age 21 and over: £12.21 Age 18 to 20: £10.00 Age under 18: £7.55 Please refer to the attached job description for full details of the role.

Main duties of the job

Work as an integral part of the department team to carry out the receipt, disassembly, cleaning, disinfection, reassembly, packing, and sterilisation of surgical instruments (medical devices). Accurately record all tasks using the departments computerised tracking and traceability system. Ensure all activities are conducted in compliance with departmental Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and the Quality Management System in accordance with BS EN ISO 13485 and MDD 93/42 EEC (MHRA) Annex: Sterility Aspects only. Support Decontamination Services Technicians and Supervisors in delivering a specialist medical device decontamination service, contributing directly to the safe clinical care of patients.   • To reprocess reusable medical devices under supervision; disassemble, clean, disinfect, check, assemble, sterilize, despatch and track in a controlled environment.
  • Under supervision, meet the demands of the department’s workload whilst consistently achieving high quality standards which will be measured by in process checks and non-conformance reports.
  • To use manual dexterity and concentration for the disassembly and reassembly of the reusable medical devices in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.
  • To operate decontamination equipment (washer disinfectors and sterilizers) and carry out routine tests in accordance with Planned Preventative Maintenance Schedule, Quality Standards and Guidance.
  • To communicate with enquiries from users in a polite and helpful manner, seeking advice when required.
  • Receive tray orders from service users, assemble order into theatre case carts and deliver to theatres in a timely manner to ensure theatre list can commence as scheduled.
  • Deliver urgent products to Theatres/Departments as necessary.
  • The post holder will be expected to participate in rostered Bank Holiday work and cover shifts as necessary for the provision of the service.
