There is currently a vacancy within our Transport Department for full time driver. Mainly based at Pinderfields Hospital but also covering Pontefract and Dewsbury sites.
A flexible approach is essential as some short notice alteration to work patterns may be required to support the service. You will be required to undertake a range of duties - transportation of equipment, case notes, patients and other associated hospital items.
The successful candidate will possess a full clean driving licence with driving experience.
Your driving history will demonstrate compliance with current health and safety legislation. Ideally, candidates will have experience of driving a range of vehicles in a workplace environment and have a good knowledge of the local area. You will have a pleasant disposition, be a good communicator and if possible have experience of working with the public.
This is a permanent full time position, 37.5 hours per week, working Monday to Friday, 08.45am - 16.45.
Main duties of the job
As a driver you will be required to undertake a range of duties that may include driving the hospital staff shuttle bus service which operates across our 3 sites. You will also be required to transport equipment, case notes, staff, patients and other associated hospital items around the Wakefield, Dewsbury and Pontefract areas.
Working as part of a team you will deliver a seamless transport service. You will be responsible for maintaining daily vehicle checks, along with ensuring relevant checklists are completed and other paperwork related to the role.

Job responsibilities
- To drive a range of Trust vehicles in a safe and responsible manner adhering to all traffic and other legal regulations. These vehicles include cars, minibuses, vans and goods vehicles.
- To ensure the protocols and procedures for safe transportation and vehicle sanitising are strictly adhered to.
- Provide cover in the absence of the Mail Driver. Collect mail from departments and offices not in the main hospital building – this includes a daily run to Dewsbury District Hospital.
- GP surgery courier service runs include collection/delivery of specimens and mail.
- Daily scheduled runs to Leeds Hospitals – this includes any ad hoc delivery/collections of patients, staff etc. within the Yorkshire region.
- To provide transport on an ad hoc basis to carry body organs/tissue, live biopsies etc and occasional mortuary requests to transport infants for autopsy.
- Scheduled shuttle services across sites for doctors, staff and medical records including any ad hoc requests.
- Pharmacy and Pathology Laboratory runs to transport drugs (including controlled drugs) and bloods/specimens (including legal specimens which have to be signed for on collection and delivery) across sites.
- General and specific patient transport service.
- Pool duties – this covers urgent and ad hoc requests for transport. Also requests for movement of larger pieces of equipment/machinery.
- The post holder will be expected to participate in rostered weekend/Bank Holiday working.
- There is a requirement to move heavy/bulky equipment and boxes. This requires the augmentation of manual handling techniques for which training will be given. This is an integral part of the drivers’ work and they will be expected to do this several times per day. The post holder is responsible for the correct use of hands free mobile phones to ensure contact with their base at all times. Under the direction of the Co-ordinator duties may be added/changed at short notice.
