Sonographer Apprenticeship
Based at Sheffield Hallam University.
We are pleased to announce that we will be enrolling one successful candidate on the Sheffield Hallam University Apprenticeship Sonographer Degree Program, due to commence in March 2023. This is a rare and exciting training opportunity to become a degree level sonographer.
The apprenticeship degree program is a new venture supported and sponsored by Health Education England (HEE), to provide the opportunity to locally train enthusiastic prospective healthcare staff to become sonographers. The new established course has been setup at Sheffield Hallam University (SHU) following accreditation from the university and Consortium for Accreditation of Sonography Education (CASE) (TBC).
Successful candidates (subject to qualifications) will be enrolled on to the degree apprenticeship to commence in March 2023. Apprentices will be expected to complete; work-based, online, self-directed learning as outlined in the university prospectus. Occasional attendance at SHU will be required. Apprenticeship sonographers will be supported in the departments at MYHT by our practice educators and sonography team.
All course fees will be paid for by the Trust (funded by HEE). The apprentice will achieve a Degree in BSc (hons) Diagnostic Sonography Apprenticeship Degree.
This is initially a fixed term contract for the duration of the apprenticeship with milestones set.
Main duties of the job
To work as a member of the Ultrasound team responsible for producing high quality Ultrasound images, to formulate reports under direct supervision within the Radiology service.
The post holder will fulfil all tasks and work as part of a team responsible for providing an efficient imaging service in the Diagnostic Imaging Department. To meet the needs of the service, the post holder may be required to work in other areas and hospitals as appropriate, as directed by the line manager. It may be necessary to attend other Imaging Departments to gain sufficient experience in some modalities.
To perform a comprehensive range of ultrasound procedures with supervision, both within the department and externally, e.g. Wards, intensive care etc. when required.
To manipulate equipment and interpret ultrasound images, producing clinical reports under the supervision of an Advanced Practitioner.
To contribute towards the efficient deployment of resources, enabling the patient to receive a safe, accurate and timely examination.
The post holder will be working towards this job description whilst undertaking a training scheme over 36 months, under supervision, to achieve a BSc Integrated Sonography Apprenticeship Degree.

- Be able to plan and successfully undertake the academic components of the Apprentice Sonographer course whilst continuing to achieve clinical competencies.
- To plan and undertake continued studies both in the workplace and at home.
- To work as part of a team responsible for providing an efficient imaging service at Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust
- Attend mandatory block weeks for the Sonographer Apprenticeship programme at the Sheffield Hallam University (SHU).
- Make a commitment to study both within working hours and at home during the duration of the apprenticeship course.
- Apprentices will be workplace based for four days (30 hours) per week and 1 day (7.5 hours) will be protected study time either locally or at the associated Higher Education Institution (HEI). Attendance of training at the associated HEI is considered to be essential and annual leave must be arranged outside these sessions.
- Attend virtual tutorials and webinars and complete all e-learning as instructed by SHU.
- Attend tutorials, teaching and CPD events arranged by the Diagnostic Imaging Department as instructed by the Advanced Practitioner
- To perform a range of ultrasound scans, as detailed within the apprenticeship programme, within the Radiology department under the supervision of a qualified sonographer at all times.
- To immediately report any fault/errors following departmental processes and highlight to the supervising sonographer/team leader.
- To communicate effectively with patients and carers of varying abilities and understanding; explaining procedures in order to gain co-operation.
- To re-assure and encourage patients and carers.
- To liaise with multidisciplinary teams regarding examination needs and results.
- To build and maintain good relationships within the team and other departments and disciplines; working together to develop service improvements.
- To input, store and provide patient information on the directorate Radiology Information System maintaining the integrity and quality of the data consistent with legislation, policies and procedures.
- Prioritise own tasks under the appropriate delegation of the registered practitioner.
- To ensure imaging procedures are carried out in accordance with mandatory departmental systems of work and protocols.
- Support service developments, the advancement of staff and skills and undertake reflective, evaluation of practice.
- Comply with manual handling guidelines and risk assessments when moving or assisting patients. To assist in the documentation of risk assessments and risk issues identified with the department
