Job summary
This is a whole time Specialist Psychiatrist post within the Acute Care Pathway in Adult Mental Health Services with on call. The post-holder will be an Approved Clinician and provide Responsible Clinician input to Mulberry House (Adult Acute Inpatient Ward).
This post is suitable for:
a. established Specialist Psychiatrists who are currently Approved Clinicians, and/or
b. as a developmental post for those seeking to develop in role to access the Specialist Register via the Portfolio Route. or
c. we would also welcome applications from Specialty Doctors who are not yet Approved Clinicians, but who seek to achieve AC status in this role as a development post (in this case, the applicant would remain on a Specialty Doctor pay scale during the development period and move to the full role when AC status is gained. During this time, the role of RC would be held by the supervising consultant given the doctor time to shadow and get evidence for the AC submission. This would be expected to take up to 18 months).
Main duties of the job
The post holder will be expected to provide senior psychiatric input to the in-patient unit. Duties will include:
- Psychiatric assessments and initial management of patients admitted to Mulberry Ward
- Review and management of treatment effectiveness
- Key role in determining suitability of patients for early discharge into Home Treatment under the continued care of the post-holder
- Working closely with the Trust Patient Flow Team around robust bed management
- Preparation of psychiatric reports for and attendance at mental health tribunals/Managers Hearings
- Responsible clinician for patients admitted under the Mental Health Act
- To conduct multidisciplinary meetings, ward rounds and CPA reviews.
- Provide clinical leadership to the in-patient team.
- Play a leading role in Business/Management Meetings for the In-patient Unit
- Supervision of medical and nursing staff in the Unit.
- The post holder will take a lead in service development and the implementation of any changes to practice as required in line with evolving evidence and tailored to meet local need.

- Full registration with GMC with licence to practice
- Meets criteria for Specialist Grade role (12 years postgrad, at least 6 years in Psychiatric specialty)
- Either established Approved Clinician OR eligible to submit portfolio for AC approval within first 12-18 months in post
Desirable
- MRCPsych or equivalent higher qualification
- MD, Management qualification, other professional qualification (e.g. CBT, PSI, CAT)
Experience
Essential
- Previous experience within General Adult Psychiatry
- Experience of psychiatric practice in a range of settings
- Experience of audit and an understanding of the principles of clinical governance
