Senior Wheelchair Technician

Job summary

The Senior Wheelchair Technician will provide technical expertise and is responsible for maintenance, repair, refurbishment and modification of manual and powered wheelchairs and associated equipment.

The post holder will support the Workshop Supervisor in providing technical input and assist the Clinicians at the assessment of service user needs

Main duties of the job

Responsible for Training / support of Technicians in equipment provision ensuring that Technicians have received training and support to compete their competencies and that they are working within their competence

To actively participate, advise and assist the Clinicians in the clinic sessions where adjustments to wheelchairs and seating systems, fitting of belts and harnesses and assembling equipment is required.

To make and fit modifications to wheelchairs as requested by Clinicians in line with manufactures instructions.

Give advice to Clinicians as to the technical feasibility of modifications according to manufacturers' guidelines.

To fault find and carry out the more complex wheelchair repair and maintenance in the most appropriate location, utilising the Trust vehicle as required.

To produce technical drawings of modifications to wheelchairs and actioning and making these.

To repair/refurbish manual and powered wheelchairs as per Medical Devices Control Assurance Guidelines.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Level 4 Apprenticeship course and/or relevant training or qualifications or agreement to work towards within timeframe agreed.
  • GCSE A - C or equivalent
  • Key Skills Level 3 Electrical, Mechanical or equivalent qualification eg City & Guilds
  • Management/Supervisory training or working towards it.
  • Full Apprenticeship undertaken and certified Electrical Systems fault finding
  • Knowledge of 12v DC systems
  • Clean driving licence to enable driving of light vehicle

Experience

Essential

  • Demonstrable experience of wheelchair services
  • Experience in using mechanical and electrical tools e.g. drills, jigsaws, grinders, bench grinders, sharpen drills and other cutting tools
  • Experience of working with people and direct customer contact
  • Expectation of being able to competently use and utilise IT systems
  • Experience in Health Service especially contact with Service users
  • Experience in Health Service especially contact with Service users
  • oBeing able to record information in patient health records, in line with GDPR

Desirable

  • Experience of stockkeeping
  • Upholstery skills
