Job summary

Zone 5-19 at The Flying Scotsman is in the exciting position of seeking to recruit a Young Persons Substance Misuse Practitioner to our team.

The practitioner would be based within a wider team of professionals such as Contraception and Sexual Health Nurses, Health Improvement Practitioners and Peer Support Workers, all working together to meet the holistic needs of the Young People of Doncaster who access our service.

We are looking for an innovative practitioner who has knowledge and understanding around vulnerabilities and risk-taking behaviours amongst groups of young people and is passionate about supporting them to make safe choices.

The successful candidate will have the relevant qualifications in substance misuse work and evidence of working with young people in a community setting.

Main duties of the job

To work with a caseload of children and young people, delivering 1:1 intervention focused on drug and alcohol, stop smoking support. Have knowledge of contraception and sexual health to offer a holistic young person-centred care.

Carry out comprehensive young person-centred assessments in conjunction with significant others such as parents/carers or other professionals

To make onward referral within the team for specialist intervention, or referral to a more appropriate agency, where necessary

Deliver health promotion and harm reduction interventions around drugs and alcohol, contraception and sexual health, sexually transmitted infections, stop smoking, parental substance misuse

In partnership with the young person and significant others develop plans of care to promote positive outcomes.

Facilitate the delivery of our family interventions programme aimed at families with inter familial substance misuse issues

To maintain close professional working relationships with other agencies and colleagues

To co-design and facilitate the delivery of workshops for young people, parents/carers and professionals

Engage with groups of young people for the ongoing co-production and evaluation of our model of service delivery

Demonstrate understanding and commitment to safeguarding children practice

Knowledge, skills and experience

Essential

  • Qualified Social Worker, Registered Nurse, or Diploma in relevant subject e.g., Health and Social Care or NVQ Level 3 or NNEB
  • Level 3 - Substance Misuse and Level 2 Motivational Interviewing.
  • Previous experience of working with young people in a community setting as well as experience of direct young person or family centred care in a health or social care setting.
