Job summary

Full-time cross-site Clinical Specialist Sonographer - Radiology Department

(Base-site either from Conquest Hospital or from Eastbourne District General Hospital)

East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust provides a high quality and comprehensive range of Ultrasound services throughout the County of East Sussex from 3 locations (Conquest Hospital Hastings, Eastbourne District General Hospital and Bexhill Hospital). The department has recently benefitted from the installation of eight new state-of-the-art ultrasound systems.

Main duties of the job

ClinicalTo maintain the core and specialised clinical competencies associated with the speciality areas of work for this Clinical Specialist role.To operate as an autonomous Clinical Specialist, understanding the professional and personal responsibilities that this level of practice attracts.To be able to evidence maintaining these competencies at appraisal, at which point they will be reviewed.To be professionally responsible and accountable for all aspects of work including the management of patients.To ensure a high standard of clinical care for the patient and to support other staff in doing the same.To maintain own CPD by keeping abreast of new trends and to encourage team members to do likewise.To maintain excellent ultrasound imaging skills and provide supervision and guidance for staff in the department.To interpret imaging and functional data and make independent decisions regarding onward management of the patient.To comply with the QA, ISAS/UKAS programmes in place for the department.To be able to fault-find and identify/assess the need for corrective measures.To undertake training of radiographic staff and students and nursing staff and students.To participate in the training and supervision of junior and mid grade medical staff (particularly Specialist Registrars) with regard to imaging procedures and image interpretation.To discuss cases and advise senior medical staff concerning the imaging and image interpretation within the Clinical Speciality.

Qualifications

Essential

  • BSc (hons) Diagnostic Radiography/DCR or equivalent in a health related specialty e.g. midwifery, nursing
  • Postgraduate qualification in Ultrasound (PG Dip or DMU)
  • HCPC or RCN Registration

Desirable

  • Lower - Middle Management training/qualification
  • Evidence of further training at Masters Level or equivalent

Experience

Essential

  • Evidence of participation in all elements of Clinical Governance
  • Staff and resource management experience

Desirable

  • Minimum 2 years postgraduate experience in Ultrasound
  • Evidence of advanced level CPD in specialist skill area
  • Evidence of wide ranging experience within specialty

Skills/knowedge/experience

  • Mentorship of junior staff and trainees
  • Experiene in undertaking audit
  • Ability to perform a comprehensive range of examinations including general abdominal, obstetric, gynaecology, paediatrics, vascular, small parts, head and neck, and breast Ultrasound
