The Sussex Health & Care Provider Collaboratives are due to come into place from 1st April 2024 & will consist of:

  • Community, Mental Health & Primary Care Collaborative
  • Acute Collaborative

We are seeking to appoint a Managing Director, initially on a 2-year fixed term contract.

The NHS provider organisations in Sussex serve a population of 1.8 million, delivering a range of primary care, acute, community & mental health services:

  • East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust
  • Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust
  • Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust
  • Queen Victoria NHS Foundation Trust
  • University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust

The Acute Collaborative will also include Surrey & Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust. Primary Care representation & engagement will include general practice, dentistry, ophthalmology & pharmacy.

The Managing Director is a new post & will play a leading role in driving the design, delivery & implementation of the collaboratives, agreeing priorities with the system's provider chief executives & chairs.

The post holder will ensure the implementation of effective programme management for all streams of work, ensuring effective governance & reporting.

The role will be critical in facilitating providers & partners through the collaboratives, to work across organisational boundaries to tackle complex problems, release collective potential & share resources & insight.

Main duties of the job

The Managing Director will operate across the provider organisations to enable effective & efficient partnership working & deliver the agreed collaborative programmes of work. The post holder will lead the PCs to deliver on their vision & successfully implement the next stage of development.

The Managing Director is an honorary member of the provider Executive Management teams. The Managing Director will be expected to establish effective working relationships with a wide range of senior clinical & managerial staff across the provider organisations.

The post holder will work with partners to develop a clear vision for the collaboratives to strengthen & enhance the effectiveness of relationships, engagement & working arrangements between the provider organisations to meet shared challenges on behalf of the Sussex population.

The post holder will be responsible for ensuring that the PCs have the appropriate resource in place to support the delivery of identified priorities & will work closely with the Sussex Health & Care Partnership (ICS) & partner organisations to ensure resource alignment where opportunities exist to support delivery of shared objectives & identify efficiencies.

The post holder will support effective engagement & communication across the provider collaboratives & with all system partners, including staff, communities, carers, & patients.

Working with Provider CEOs and Primary Care leadership, the Managing Director will be responsible for:

  • The development of the provider collaboratives (PCs) and establishment of an effective programme management (PMO) function, subject to resource/ staff being made available.
  • Acute Collaborative
  • Community, Mental Health, and Primary Care Collaborative
  • Working across a wide and diverse stakeholder group to build commitment to a shared strategic vision for the PCs and aligned areas of focus; and ensuring high visibility of the PCs within ICS plans for Sussex.
  • Identifying projects within the ICS Shared Delivery Plan (SDP) work streams which should be governed through the PCs, recognising that the PCs sit alongside the SDP and there is no automatic allocation of work to PCs.
  • Working with key stakeholders across the system to establish and evolve mechanisms to support the development and delivery of PCs functions and objectives.
  • Developing the infrastructure for the PCs and managing all sources and applications of resources attributable to the work of the PCs as part of the ICS.
  • Oversight and leadership of all collaborative priorities and work with the Chair/ Convener and lead CEOs on the strategic development of the PCs, leading on horizon scanning to ensure alignment with local, regional, and national policy.
  • Representing the PC at local, place and national meetings.

The post holder is required to lead highly complex transformational change and improvement, working in partnership across the system.

The post holder will be responsible for ensuring the PCs priorities are consistent with those of NHS Sussex and place-based leadership, and that agreed arrangements facilitate the effective at scale planning delivery, improvement and transformation of services required to meet the ambitions set out in the Sussex Health and Care System Strategy and over time reflect any agreed delegated responsibilities from the ICB.

  • A proven track record of driving improvements in performance and standards of care and delivering change within an organisation, including working closely with clinicians
