Job summary

The Endoscopy Service at Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust has a full time vacancy for a Healthcare Assistant (HCA).

The Trust has two purpose built state of the art, JAG Accredited Endoscopy Units, one based at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary and one at the Calderdale Royal Hospital. The units deliver the Bowel Screening service alongside the diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy service to out-patients and in-patients. Both units are training units, training both medical staff and clinical endoscopists. The Endoscopy Service has a clinical educator to ensure that all nursing staff receive support and training in all aspects of endoscopy from patient pre-assessment, assessment on day, consent, recovery, assisting with diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. This is supported by a training package specifically designed for Endoscopy staff.

Main duties of the job

To assist qualified nursing staff with direct/ indirect patient care within clearly defined limits and attainment of defined competence. To work without constant direct supervision using initiative within the level of competence for the post.Decontaminate and prepare endoscopic equipment according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and Trust Policy.

Maintain traceability processes within the department.

Work under the direct / indirect supervision of senior nurses and with other members of the multidisciplinary team to provide the physical and emotional care for both inpatients and outpatients undergoing a variety of endoscopic procedures on the Endoscopy Department and any other department where endoscopic procedures are undertaken.

Ability to work in all areas of the Endoscopy Departments within the Trust - clean and dirty decontamination, theatre, recovery and admissions cross site. Ability to work flexibly to cover all shift patterns on the unit including evenings and weekends.

  • The successful applicant will be expected to cross site work. Due to the nature of the work, flexibility around working hours is necessary.
  • The Endoscopy service provides a 6 days service working from Monday to Saturday.
  • To act as patients advocate during invasive procedures.
  • To ensure patients privacy and dignity are maintained at all times. To assist as directed clinical staff during procedures involving sedation and/or local anaesthesia or general anaesthesia.
  • To monitor and record accurately patient observations.
  • To comply with Trust policy regarding the handling and storage of medicines.
  • To participate in admission, recovery and discharge of all endoscopy patients, in accordance with unit policies and patient pathways, reporting to qualified staff as directed.

  • English GCSE grade 9-2 (A*-E) or equivalent or high level of literacy skills demonstrated within application
  • Competence based level 2 Qualification e.g. NVQ or Diploma in Care or The Care Certificate issued by an employer
  • Willingness to undertake any training or development relevant to the role
  • Competent in cannulation/venepuncture
  • Moving and Handling
  • Infection Control
