Job summary
To work within the Paediatric Dietetic service providing dietary advice across inpatients, outpatients and community.
Main duties of the job
- To act as specialist clinician for the paediatric service , supporting the clinical lead/s with evolving and embedding best practice into the clinical area.
- To manage own specialist caseload in this area. This may include advising the MDT on the most appropriate form of nutritional management for children and cover for children's ward/special care baby unit/childrens day unit, educational establishments for children with additional learning needs and general/specialist Paediatric Clinics as required. There is potential for post holder to be the lead paediatric dietitian for IBD depending on their previous experience. The post will work closely with the enteral feed nurse to support children on home enteral feeds in the community.
- To carry out specialist assessment and treatment of children in a variety of settings with the aim of preventing hospital admissions and/or facilitating safe and timely discharges and transfer of care.
- Determine a clinical diagnosis, develop, deliver, implement, evaluate and modify individualised treatment programs and/or provide specialist advice, ensuring appropriate pathways of care and communication via liaison and referral to other agencies as required.
- Take part in the education and training of Dietitians and qualified and non-qualified healthcare / social services / education staff including medical staff.
- To support the Clinical Leads/ Team Leader in the day to day running of the Dietetic Team.

Job responsibilities
- To work within the paediatric dietetic service, developing effective clinical interventions within the speciality in order to contribute to clinical practice in the team in line with current evidence base.
- To manage autonomously a clinical workload of patients at a specialist level, assessing and treating children and young adults and maintaining clinical records.

To provide highly complex sensitive nutritional counseling to paediatric patients, parents and carers where postgraduate training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and use of empathy, reassurance and motivational skills are required to overcome barriers to change.
Ability to utilise developed communication and teaching skills (verbal and non-verbal) to communicate highly complex information in an understandable form to the diverse and multicultural population and where there are significant barriers to understanding e.g. challenging behaviours, learning difficulties, cognitive impairment and pain or fear as a result of their medical condition.
To take a lead in providing expert dietetic advice to the multidisciplinary team in meetings and ward rounds in order to provide expert advice to clinicians regarding the provision of dietetic treatment for babies and children based on clinical evidence. This will involve nutritional assessment (interpretations of biochemistry, anthropometrics, drug interactions, clinical condition and diet history) and the development of treatment plans (calculation of nutritional requirements and client-centred goals).
To be responsible for ensuring that patients, parents and carers have consented prior to dietetic intervention in line with professional guidelines.
Provide expert dietetic input for those patients requiring nutritional support based on the interpretation of biochemical results, medical conditions and ethical issues.
To directly prescribe nutritional supplements and enteral feeds for paediatric patients based on interpretation of nutritional assessment (within local policy agreements) and provide detailed nutritional treatment plans using such supplements/enteral feeds.
Make recommendations to the medical team regarding appropriate enteral/parenteral nutrition prescriptions and other medication e.g. laxatives, prokinetics and pancreatic enzymes.
To be responsible for the discharge planning, organisation and co-ordination with other health professionals and outside agencies of paediatric patients being discharged on enteral feeds.
To liaise with the community multidisciplinary team, tertiary centres (e.g. Leeds General Infirmary) and catering staff (including the provision of school meals) concerning the complex dietary requirements of paediatric patients and assist in instructing chefs on the preparation of special meals as required and provide advice regarding prescription of specialist diets.
Is trained to trainer level in the safe use of enteral feeding pumps and anthropometrical equipment as appropriate and report faulty equipment in accordance with local policy.
Be responsible for delivering interventions in a wide variety of settings as required e.g. paediatric wards, special care baby unit, childrens Day unit, schools and outpatient clinics.
- To apply evidence based knowledge within the specialist clinical area acquired through experience and academic study to a specialist post graduate level.
- To act, within the dietetic service, as a resource and provide advice for Dietitians, other professionals and colleagues within the MDT about the assessment, treatment, management and care of paediatric patients / clients who have a multi-pathological illness and/or complex psychosocial need.
- To work collaboratively with health and social care community and acute colleagues.
- To work with other members of the MDT to ensure effective care pathways and transfer of care / discharges.
- To proactively and appropriately facilitate a seamless transfer of care and continuing therapeutic management of paediatric patients between care settings.
- To work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary manner within the MDT, being able to debate the blurring of boundaries across professions and where competent take on aspects of blurred boundary working, where appropriate.
- To develop specialist programmes of assessment, treatment and intervention paediatric patients.
- To manage and prioritise own clinical workload as appropriate, working efficiently to manage professional time and delegate according to the training and competency levels of other team members to ensure the effective delivery of the service.

- To participate in governance initiatives on a regular basis, measuring and evaluating individual and the Dietetic teams clinical practice, e.g. CPD, clinical effectiveness, research and development, clinical audit and service activity data.
- To ensure specialised treatments offered to patients / clients are based on the best available clinical evidence by keeping up to date with current literature, implementing research tools and liaising with other practitioners, both within and outside the service, in order to develop and maintain best practice.
- To be responsible for the issue and safe use of equipment used in your area of work and to adhere to the appropriate service policies.
- Along with the Clinical Lead / Team Leader generate and contribute to the collection, analysis and dissemination of data as required for the service, both manually and computerised.
