Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an exceptional pharmacy technician to lead the profession across Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Trust. We are seeking anexperienced, proactive, enthusiastic, forward thinking pharmacy technician to lead and deliver medicines optimisation across the organisation in conjunction with the Clinical Director of Pharmacy. The post holder will be a key player on the pharmacy board and work closely with the entire senior pharmacy team and other healthcare professionals across the wider organisation.

This is a hugely exciting time for an individual with drive, passion and vision to join the team with multiple transformation projects ongoing including the re-design, robot installation and implementation of a new dispensary at our Calderdale site and the first acute Trust to have electronic CD registers across the whole organisation.

Main duties of the job

  • Responsible for the professional leadership of Pharmacy Technicians throughout the Trust ensuring compliance with professional standards and statute
  • Responsible for the strategic development and operational management of allocated Pharmacy Technicians, Pharmacy Assistants and admin staff within the Department of Pharmacy
  • To provide an oversight of education, training and development of Pharmacy Technicians and support staff.
  • A member of the Pharmacy Directorate Management Board assisting in the strategic development and performance management of the Pharmacy Directorate ensuring the provision of high-quality patient focused pharmaceutical care and effective medicines management
  • The post holder has lead responsibility in conjunction with the Lead Pharmacist - Operations, for the operational management of the pharmacy department at CRH & HRI. This includes organising, managing, supervision and at times participating in the workload , assessing the service using audits or performance indicators. Problem resolution relating to medication and supervising the work of trainee pharmacists, technicians and assistants within the team to ensure that the service provided is safe, efficient and effective.

2.1 Main Tasks

  • Manages the Inpatient Pharmacy Service ensuring compliance with national standards and statute.
  • Responsible for the introduction of innovative practice and performance management measures across the whole Clinical Pharmacy Service
  • Supports The Clinical Director of Pharmacy in setting the strategic direction for the Divisional Clinical Pharmacy Service
  • Provides strategic leadership for the band 5/6/7 Technicians
  • Actively contributes to the development of the annual business plan and strategic planning for the Pharmacy Directorate.
  • Ensures that the Inpatient Pharmacy Service fulfils Directorate objectives and is provided within allocated financial resources.
  • Continually reviews and improves the quality and standard of service provision through consultation with users of the Pharmacy Service.

3.1 Clinical Duties

  • Ensures appropriate assistance is given to patients with the management and optimisation of their medicines by the most suitable staff

3.2 Professional Duties

  • Implement Trust policies in relation to Medicines Optimisation
  • Manage risk in areas of responsibility
  • To demonstrate knowledge and skills of pharmaceutical technical procedures acquired through the Level 3 Diploma in Pharmacy Service Skills (NVQ) (QCF) and BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Pharmaceutical Science (QCF), or other appropriate qualification recognised by the General Pharmaceutical Council of Great Britain
  • Undertake the legal and professional responsibilities of a registered technician
  • Undertakes Continuing Professional Development (CPD) in accordance requirements of the GPhC

3.3 Managerial Duties

  • Manages the Inpatient pharmacy service across both sites of the Trust in conjunction with the Clinical lead Pharmacist to continually review service provision and ensure appropriate skill mix
  • Manages the provision of extended hours working within the pharmacy department in conjunction with the Deputy Clinical Director of Pharmacy
  • Manages the pharmacy administration team
  • Is responsible for the successful recruitment and selection of Technicians and Assistant Technical Officers for the Inpatient Pharmacy Service.
  • Implements Trust Human Resource policies in relation to the Inpatient Pharmacy Service and undertakes sickness and absence, capability and disciplinary reviews.
  • Ensures that all staff working in services managed by the post holder are competent to perform their duties, receive appropriate training, an annual appraisal and personal development plan.
  • Manages the Education and Training Technicians and the Dispensary Managers on each site and ensures compliance with Good Practice

3.4 Financial Duties

  • Is responsible for the management of the staffing budget for the Inpatient Pharmacy Service and advises the Clinical Director of Pharmacy on resource requirements for service provision.
  • Acts as an authorised signatory within the Directorate Schedule of delegated authority.
  • Contributes to the directorate and divisional Cost Improvement Programme (CIP)
3.5 Managing Self
  • Participate in regular supervision.
  • Attend all mandatory training.
  • Participate annually identifying, developing and agreeing your own development plan with your Line Manager using the Trust Appraisal.
  • Comply with all Trust policies, procedures and protocols.
  • Carry out duties with due regard to the Trusts Equal Opportunity Policy.
