Job summary

We have a rare fantastic opportunity to recruit to a motivated and dynamic highly specialist Speech and Language Therapist therapist to join our Children's Therapy team,

This post is to work as a Speech and Language Therapist within Calderdale Youth Justice Service, employed by Calderdale & Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust. Calderdale Youth Justice Service undertakes assessments and interventions for young people aged 10 -18 years of age who have committed a criminal offence or they are at risk of offending. The team's priority is to prevent offending and reduce further offending by addressing the criminogenic factors and by undertaking educative behavioural programmes. The team supervise community and custodial sentences and provide preventative interventions for young people at risk of offending. The team specialise in knife crime, gangs and domestic violence. The team have always valued restorative approaches in the work with young people.

Main duties of the job

To act as a highly specialist clinician for the Calderdale Youth Justice Service supporting the case managers with the communication and engagement of young people supervised by the team. Undertaking assessments of the young people's level of understanding and communication ability, and, when required, present the findings in Court, at Children's Social Care and Education panels and professional meetings.

To assess and review of the suitability of documents given to young people as part of their engagement with the Youth Justice Service and advise and support parents and carers to support their child.

To work autonomously within Trust policies and professional practice, maintaining accurate and comprehensive up to date records.

To manage own highly specialist caseload in this area.

To determine a clinical diagnosis, develop, deliver, implement, evaluate and modify individualised treatment programmes and/or provide highly specialist advice, ensuring appropriate pathways of care and communication via liaison and referral to other agencies as required.

To educate and train Youth Justice Service staff both qualified and non-qualified social workers, youth workers, teachers, police Officers and other specialist healthcare staff.

About us

The post holder will sit within the Youth justice service but will also be an integral part of Children's therapy services and the wider SALT team.The children's therapy team is a community based service. We have team bases in both Halifax and Huddersfield. We see children in a variety of settings including home, schools and early years settings. The team consists of Speech and Language Therapists, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists and therapy assistants.

We have excellent links with schools, early years settings and social care and you will become part of the wider team supporting children and their families,

To develop highly specialist programmes of assessment, treatment and intervention.

To manage and prioritise own clinical workload as appropriate, working efficiently to manage professional time and delegate according to the training and competency levels of other team members to ensure the effective delivery of the service.

To participate in the supervision process with staff on a daily basis and for students as required.

To ensure specialised treatments offered to children and young people are based on the best available clinical evidence by keeping up to date with current literature, implementing research tools and liaising with other practitioners, both within and outside the service, in order to develop and maintain best practice.

To be responsible for the issue and safe use of equipment used in your area of work and to adhere to the appropriate service policies.

Generate and contribute to the collection, analysis and dissemination of data as required for the service, both manually and computerised.

To lead, develop and actively undertake clinical audit.

To support members of the Youth Justice Service and contribute to them successfully meeting their objectives and development needs.

Managerial Duties

To support and advise on the delivery of interventions in the Youth Justice Service.

To provide the Service Manager with advice/information in the planning and development of the service and to identify and evaluate potential areas for service and quality improvement.
