Job summary

This is a recently developed post and offers the opportunity to work in a healthcare setting, promoting, and delivering exercise sessions to Mental Health inpatients at Prospect Park Hospital.

The post holder will be an integral member of the Allied Health Profession Therapy Team at Prospect Park Hospital. You will work with the qualified Physiotherapists to provide an exercise based service to both adult and older adult inpatients at Prospect Park Hospital.

Patients who access this service experience mental health problems of varying degree and severity. Your role will involve working with patients with Anxiety, Depression, Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, Dementia, and Personality Disorders. You will have skills and knowledge to understand how these conditions impact on someone's motivation and ability to participate in physical activity.

Main duties of the job

The role is to assist patients during their inpatient stay through rehabilitation towards independence, increased functional capacity and self-management. The role will involve delivery of exercise programs to patients on a 1:1 basis and taking part in group work which will include leading exercise or education sessions in the hospital gym. There is scope to develop the provision of exercise sessions within the hospital gym and gym- based work is a key aspect of this role.

The role will seek to promote the importance of physical activity in mental health, to patients, carers and other health professionals and to liaise with outside agencies for onward referral.

Assessment for and provision of walking aids is also part of the role in falls prevention.

Time may be split between Older Adult and Adult patients according to the needs of the service. As such this will involve working as part of the Older Adult Multidisciplinary Team and Adult Multidisciplinary Team. The post holder will work both autonomously and as part of the Physiotherapy Team working alongside the Physiotherapists.

The post holder will assist in the production of statistical information; to ensure that supplies are maintained within the budget and maintaining training records ensuring mandatory and statutory training is allocated.

This role will also include assisting the Senior Physiotherapists with some administrative duties and equipment ordering.
