Job summary
The role of the consultant
midwife is to provide expert clinical care and leadership within the maternity
service. By working in collaboration with the Maternity Triumvirate (Director
of Midwifery, Clinical Business Unit Manager and Clinical Director) and wider
senior team the Consultant Midwife will deliver clinical care and ensure there
is effective leadership, education and training, practice and service
development and research/evaluation within the maternity service.
They will be an
expert, autonomous practitioner of midwifery, a role model for midwives, a lead
for midwifery research and practice development and a reference for obstetric
and nursing colleagues within the organisation.
The Consultant Midwife will function
as an expert midwifery advisor internally and externally. This will include
acting as an ambassador for the Trusts maternity service, representing it as a
centre of excellence internally and nationally as required by the Director of
Midwifery or Chief Nurse.
The Consultant Midwife will
work in conjunction with the Director of Midwifery to lead the maternity transformation
programme regarding professional issues to support the organisation to go from
good to outstanding.
The post will be characterised
by the following four principal functions of a Consultant Midwife:-

Main duties of the job
They will work with the
Director and Head of Midwifery, Deputy Head of Midwifery and the wider
multi-disciplinary team, providing strategic and clinical midwifery leadership
which reflects and supports current and future needs of the maternity service. Involved in developing and maintaining collaborative
working and effective communication within Womens and Children Business Unit
to provide evidence based positive patient experience.
Work as part of the
leadership team empowering midwives to meet the needs of the local population
in line with key objectives outlined in local and national policy documents. They
will work collaboratively across the Local Maternity and Neonatal Maternity
System (LMNS) to ensure local, regional, and national midwifery goals and
policy are achieved.
The Consultant Midwife will be
the Maternity lead for the patient experience workstreams and will work closely
with the Maternity Voices Partnership. They will also have a key role to play
in maintaining oversight of audit, guideline review and improvement and there
is an expectation the role will take a significant contribution to the clinical
governance agenda through the provision of advice on best practice and the
support and development of staff. The post holder will not be charged with
operational management but will strongly contribute to day-to-day operational
issues ensuring any improvements required are embedded back into practice.
