Locum Consultant Ophthalmologist

Job responsibilities

Warrington & Halton Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust wishes to appoint a full time Locum Consultant Ophthalmologist for a 12 month fixed term contract. We are keen to accept applications from candidates with a special interest in, paediatric ophthalmology, ocular motility and neuro-ophthalmology.

The candidate appointed will work on the Warrington site but will be expected to work in other Trust sites if there is further expansion to ophthalmology services.

This is a full-time post in Ophthalmology and will include on call cover of 1 in 14 for 2nd on call.

Applicants are required to be a Registered Medical Practitioner, to be fully registered with the General Medical Council and listed on the Specialist Register or due to be registered within six months of the date of appointment.

SPECIFIC JOB REQUIREMENTS

Essential

• Enthusiasm and the ability to work under pressure
• Caring attitude to patients
• Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, patients, relatives, GPs nurses, other staff, and agencies
• Good interpersonal skills
• An understanding of the current NHS environment particularly in relation to reforms, initiatives and issues
• Ability to travel to fulfil the requirements of the post

Desirable

• Have a flexible approach to hours of work with notice

Qualifications

Essential

• Full GMC Registration
• On the Specialist Register for Ophthalmology, holding CCT or expected to do within 12 months of interview

Desirable

• MD/ PhD or other equivalent higher degree

Experience

Essential

• Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the care of patients
• Training and experience in area of sub-specialty.
• Evidence of a wide experience in Ophthalmology and UK experience
• Independent in ophthalmic surgery.
• Experience of supervision of ophthalmology trainees
• Subspeciality fellowship completed

Desirable

• Evidence of logical thinking and an ability to make clear and balanced decisions
• Demonstrate an understanding of the development needs of trainees and how these can be met.
• Ability to run independent cataract lists

• Ability to work well within a team
• Organisational & Leadership skills
• Clinical Governance understanding
• Be caring and diplomatic.
• Basic keyboard skills
• Ability to plan strategically and to exercise sound judgment when faced with conflicting pressures.
• Knowledge and experience in the application of IT in Ophthalmology

• To work effectively as part of the Trust Management Structure
• Show ability to learn from experience.
• Demonstrate insight into managing a busy caseload.
