Main duties of the job
This post is suitable for individuals seeking a period of experience in Critical Care Medicine to develop their knowledge, skills and CV.
Candidates must have completed their Foundation Years Training and Competencies, although more senior doctors are welcome to apply. The role is tailored for doctors who have just completed their foundation training.
The appointee will work within the Critical Care Unit gaining clinical experience reflecting their training ambitions and needs. The role will combine working alongside and supporting consultant and trainee colleagues in Critical Care.
The post holder will join the Junior Fellow/ACCP rota. The rota is a 1:8 rota including other clinical fellows, FY2 doctors and our qualified ACCPs.
The 1:7 covers seven days a week including long days and twilight shifts (4pm-midnight)

Teaching
The unit has a strong ethos of medical education which we are keen to continue and develop.
The successful applicant will have the opportunity to participate in formal and informal teaching programmes on the unit, including our weekly in-situ SIM training programme.
As a teaching hospital we have medical students throughout the year, including SAMP students and students from Portsmouth University undertaking their intercalated degree in Critical Care which will give the successful candidate opportunities to develop their teaching skills.
During your time with you will be able to attend departmental teaching with our intensive care and anaesthetic trainees.
Research/Audit
Research is very much an area of development within our unit post COVID. We are now a recruiting centre for MARCH, UK-ROX, MOSAIIC, T4P, ABC, iREHAB as well as the ICNARC Genomics study with further trials in setup.
As a unit we aspire to develop our research capability further and have support from our research department, as well as strong links with other departments involved in research. Clinical Fellows on our unit are strongly encouraged to be an active participant.
You will have an opportunity to undertake the GCP and become recruiters for the trials we have on the unit and to understand the research process.
We also have a good history with quality improvement/audit projects and you will be encouraged to undertake a project with the aim of presenting this at our departmental governance meetings and other forums
Continuing Medical Education
It is the responsibility of the post holder to ensure they are registered for continuing professional development and are responsible for keeping themselves abreast of new developments and best evidence based practice.
You will get support to ensure you complete an appraisal during your placement with us. We have an excellent record with our Clinical Fellows of supporting them through Speciality Interviews for Core Training with the majority of our previous fellow getting their top choice of job.
The post holder will be considered for study leave to attend formal courses, conferences, etc., and the funding will be available according to the agreed terms and conditions of service for the medical staff within the NHS.
