Job summary

This post offers an exciting opportunity for a motivated Paediatric Emergency Physician to deliver high quality, effective clinical care in a busy modern District General Emergency Department. Applicants must be on the GMC Specialist Register or within 6 months of obtaining a Certificate of Completion of Training or CESR at the time of interview. Applications are encouraged from candidates who have a special area of interest such as Paediatric Critical Care Medicine, Neonatal Medicine, Ambulatory Care, Research, Simulation or Teaching and Training. This position is for 10 -12 Pas, subject to discussion, we are happy to consider those that wish to work fewer PAs.

Main duties of the job

Consultants in Paediatric Emergency Medicine at Warrington undertake a variety of clinical roles when on clinical shifts, either being the medical coordinator, responsible for flow and decisions within the department, or acting as a Senior Doctor at Triage (SDAT), responding to standby calls and unwell patients in our two resuscitation areas, or giving advice to junior clinicians across the department and our Urgent Treatment Centre.

When not undertaking clinical shifts a PED Consultant would undertake their SPA in our new bespoke offices, adjacent to two new training rooms and an ED Simulation suite. Teaching also occurs in the department with the RCEM Clinical Educator Role, as well as supervising medical and Physician Associate undergraduates, Foundation doctors, GPST and EM HST trainees. We are developing an ACP training school, with new starters in Acute Medicine from February, with ED posts starting in late 2023.

The current medical staff consists of 11 WTE Consultants, 1 Paediatric EM Consultant, 2 Associate Specialists, 3 Staff Grades, 6 EM HSTs, 3 ST3+ doctors, 2 GPST1/2, 6 F2s, 5 Specialty doctors, 12 Physician Associates, 2 Advanced Clinical Practitioners and 2 Paediatric ACPs.

About us

Warrington Hospital is the larger acute hospital in the Warrington and Halton Trust, with 578 in-patient beds, the ED at Warrington serves a population of over 310,000 people; it is open 24 hours daily and sees 100,000 new patients per year, of which 20,000 are under the age of 18. There are a wide range of specialties on site including Medicine, Surgery, Intensive Care, Trauma and Orthopaedics, ENT, Ophthalmology, Paediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Urology. Warrington and Halton Teaching Hospital has been rated Good in its most recent CQC inspection.

The department has recently built a new £4.3 million same day emergency care area (SDEC), as well as building a new Paediatric Emergency Department, expanding to 11 cubicles, a triage room, stabilization room, access to an eye room and two waiting rooms for respiratory and none respiratory patients. Work is ongoing in 2023 to build a new minor injuries and illness area between ED Ambulatory care, SDEC and the Paeds ED, with a new CT scanning area due for completion within the body of the department by August 2023.

This is an exciting new opportunity to develop in a role with close workings with a Senior Management team across a clinically led business unit. A typical post would offer 40 hours per week covering clinical shifts on the 24/7 ED rota.

The post holder will take part in the initial assessment, resuscitation, investigation, diagnosis, and treatment of paediatric patients attending the Emergency Department in Warrington. Appropriate arrangements for continuing care will be made in conjunction with senior colleagues in the relevant specialties.

The post holder will provide support [telephone advice] for the Emergency Nurse Practitioners working at Runcorn Urgent Care Centre.

As Medical Coordinator the post holder will be expected to work with the Nurse Coordinator to keep a global awareness of departmental activity and allocate the available staffing and resources accordingly

The post holder will deputise for absent colleagues and undertake additional duties but only in exceptional circumstances.

Within the hours of duty, the post holder will share in the day-to-day supervision for Junior Medical Staff in the Department. The post holder will be readily available for advice and support when on call and should therefore be readily contactable by long-range bleep/telephone.

The job plan will be a prospective agreement that sets out a consultants duties, responsibilities and objectives for the coming year. It should cover all aspects of a consultants professional practice including clinical work, teaching, research, education and managerial responsibilities. It should provide a clear schedule of commitments, both internal and external. In addition, it should include personal objectives, including details of their link to wider service objectives, and details of the support required by the consultant to fulfil the job plan and the objectives.

A formal job plan will be agreed between the appointee, the CBU Manager and Clinical Director, with final agreement by the Deputy Medical Director.

It will be reviewed at 3 months & thereafter annually or at any time, but no less than 3 months after a previous review, as requested by the appointee, Medical Director or Clinical Director & adjusted accordingly to the agreement of both parties.

The following provides scheduling details of clinical activity and clinically related activity components of a provisional example job plan. This is liable to change depending upon the needs of the department and division and interests of prospective appointees. Agreement should be reached between the appointee and the Lead Clinician with regard to the scheduling of all activities, including the Supporting Professional Activities.
