Job summary

An opportunity has become available for a permanent band 6 Biomedical Scientist within the Biochemistry department. We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated individual with good organisational skills to join our hard working and friendly team. Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills and an ability to support individual and team working is essential. These skills and attributes are in line with the Trust's values.

The department has recently installed the Siemens Atellica chemistry and immunoassay analysers, which are connected to pre and post analytical modules. The department also has Helena Electrophoresis systems, Sebia HbA1c analysers and a Thermo Fisher Phadia 250 for allergy and autoimmune work. All systems are interfaced to the Laboratory information system: CGM MOLIS.

The department has laboratories at both Warrington and Halton Hospitals with staff rotating across both sites.

The post holder must have been awarded a Specialist portfolio in Biochemistry to be eligible to be award the band 6 post. Applicants without the Specialist IBMS portfolio would be considered for a Band 5 position, with the opportunity to apply for a band 6 post on completion of the specialist portfolio when there is a band 6 vacancy within the department.

Warrington Pathology Department is part of the Cheshire and Merseyside Pathology network, as part of the network there are plans to merge the service with Mersey and West Lancashire Pathology laboratories from April 2026

Main duties of the job

As a Specialist Biomedical Scientist the post holder will be expected to work within the professional standards expected as a registrant of the Health Professions Council (HCPC) and maintain a portfolio of evidence supporting Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

The successful candidate will be expected to:

Process samples, validating, and communicating critical abnormal results.

Review internal quality control and undertake analyser maintenance and troubleshooting

Be expected to work across all areas of Biochemistry including automation, electrophoresis and immunology sections.

Participate in the out of hours and weekend rotas

Work independently without supervision

Provide support and guidance to band 5 BMS and support staff

Participate in the quality management system of the department
