Job summary

We are seeking an as and when Waste Porter to work at Warrington Hospital.

The main duties of the role include the collection of healthcare waste (clinical or domestic) across the Warrington site in accordance with set work schedules and collection points. To ensure the effective collection, transportation, segregation, and storage of all waste is in accordance with legislation, Environmental Waste Regulations, Trust Waste Policy and Guidelines. To carry out daily checks of clinical waste containers delivered to the site by the external contractor re quantity and maintenance and accurately recorded and escalate if required.

The post-holder will be required to drive a tug and ensure up to date training is completed, and perform daily vehicle checks for damage and cleanliness at the commencement of each shift. This new role will work on a rota basis of one month day shift, next month night shift and will be expected to provide cover for other colleagues on either shift pattern as and when required.

This role must be conducted in accordance with Trust Waste Policies and Procedures and Environmental Protection Act 1990 and must adhere to Duty of Care Requirements on the handling of waste at all times.

The post-holder will preferably have previous experience in a healthcare environment and must have an NVQ Level 2 (or equivalent) in Customer Care.

The post-holder will have a positive attitude and excellent organisational skills.

Main duties of the job

Undertake the collection of healthcare waste (clinical or domestic) across the Warrington site in accordance with set work schedules and collection points.

Ensures the effective collection, transportation, segregation and storage of all waste in accordance with legislation, Environmental Waste Regulations, Trust Waste Policy and Guidelines.

Undertakes daily checks of clinical waste containers delivered to the site by the external contractor re quantity and maintenance.

Undertakes pre-user checks of tugs and cages and recording of information and reports any faults to Supervisor.

Undertakes daily reporting of issues or problems to Supervisor (verbally and documented) to ensure that an effective and efficient service is maintained at all times.

Knowledge of the consignment of hazardous clinical waste processes.

Participate in Trust mandatory training and any departmental specific training

Information Resources

Undertakes daily pre user check of waste carts and recording of information.

Consignment of hazardous clinical waste on a daily basis and completion of necessary paperwork on a daily basis.

Undertakes quality audits of waste carts on corridors and records information.

Recording of information in Pre-User Check Register for Tugs and Cages on a daily basis.

Use of Microsoft Outlook/ability to email.

Emotional Effort

Ensure tasks which may be a hazard to oneself or others such as driving of tugs are carried out in a safe and courteous manner, using a high level of customer care.

Physical Effort

Frequent use of operating machinery, e.g. driving of tugs with cages

Frequent manoeuvring of waste bins and cages and lifting of waste bags and sharps containers.
