Job summary

We are seeking two enthusiastic, committed, and motivated individuals to join our Data Warehouse Team as Data Warehouse Developers. Reporting to the Senior Data Warehouse Developers, you will be responsible for the daily operational support and development of the Trust's data warehouse and business intelligence systems.

Main duties of the job

You'll be undertaking a range of tasks that will challenge your skills and ensure you keep learning, such as:

  • Keeping existing datasets loading successfully, quickly, and accurately
  • Transforming unfriendly system data into user-friendly reporting data
  • Using SQL and non-SQL technologies to streamline workflows
  • Creating new datasets from existing and new hospital systems
  • Troubleshooting performance issues to deliver a great user experience
  • Liaising with non-technical people to understand and solve problems

Job responsibilities

Application Design, Development & Maintenance

1. To develop the Trusts Data Warehouse as the primary source of all management information relating to patient activity, by the introduction of additional datasets or views of data, ensuring that NHS data standards are adhered to and tables within the system are structured to maximise interrogation speed.2. To support the Senior Data Warehouse Developers in the development and execution of software designed to ensure that the data warehouse is populated in a timely manner by extracts of data from the Trusts core patient-based information systems. 3. To develop and maintain the data extraction and information reporting tools provided to clinicians and managers to allow direct access to the Data Warehouse, and to provide training in the use of such tools.4. To support the Senior Data Warehouse Developers in the maintenance of adequate documentation for all data structures, reference data files, data feeds, and SQL scripts and processes associated with the Data Warehouse.5. To design and develop other bespoke patient-based applications as necessary to support the services provided to patients and to meet mandated information requirements. To ensure that the Digital Analytics housekeeping tasks associated with such systems and data are adequately implemented.

Information Management & Presentation

6. To ensure that regular, timely and accurate information is provided to hospital management and clinicians using data extracted from the Data Warehouse. This will involve determining the requirements of the clinicians and managers concerned, and then developing appropriate software for the extraction and collation of data and the presentation of information.7. To ensure that all software developed and each information output produced is documented in accordance with departmental standards, is adequately secured, and is subject to stringent quality assurance tests before output is issued. 8. To prioritise and respond to ad hoc requests for information from authorised internal and external sources.

Training & Development

9. To work with the Senior Data Warehouse Developers to ensure sufficient knowledge transfer is achieved to prevent disruption to the service in the absence of the Senior Data Warehouse Developers.10. To develop and extend expertise in data management, using data extraction and query tools.

Strategy & Communication

To assist the Senior Data Warehouse Developers and other members of the Directorate in assessing the impact of changes to the NHS information agenda, in identifying and reviewing the information requirements of Directorates, and in implementing agreed software solutions to information problems. This could involve extending the data warehouse by the inclusion of additional datasets, or the development of bespoke software or applications.

  • At least 2 years' experience in the design and programming of multi-user computerised information systems.
  • The design, creation, and loading of datasets using data from source systems, to support multiple forms of reporting, e.g. Excel-based, web-based, OLAP-based.
  • Familiarity with complex computerised information systems

  • Degree or equivalent in Computer Science or Informatics

  • Excellent Microsoft T-SQL skills: the ability to create complex queries using multiple sources, and being able to encapsulate these into stored procedures, views, and functions.
  • Skilled with Microsoft SSIS and ETL processes particularly, including the ability to create complex workflows and deploy them effectively.
  • A logical and analytical approach to problem solving demonstrated in an information systems environment.
  • Good organisation skills relating to creating and maintaining electronic filing systems, locating data and information, and meeting deadlines.
  • Knowledge of data management technologies.
