Devon Partnership Trust are looking for a Cook Team Supervisor for their patient meal service based at Langdon Hospital, Dawlish. The main aim of the role is to provide, support and maintain a quality patient meal service in compliance with food hygiene and safety regulations, according to individual patient needs. The Catering Department is undergoing a major refurbishment at present which will result in a purpose built production unit with the latest state of art equipment, so very exciting time to join us.

We operate a Cook Freeze food production service for approximately 250 patients catering for our wards at Langdon and Exeter area. You would be working within a friendly hard working team of 12 staff consisting of a Catering Manager, 3 Cook Team Supervisors, Catering Administrator and 7 Catering Assistants.

Main duties of the job

The role would suit a confident and highly motivated individual who is an excellent team player with strong leadership skills, has a passion for catering and an eye for detail. Its a varied and challenging role, where no day is the same, which will see you involved in duties that include the day to day supervision of the food production in compliance with our HACCP and computerised systems.

The shift pattern is straight shifts, No evenings from either 6.30am-2.30pm or 7.30am-3.30pm, 5 days a week, working 1 in 3 weekends including Bank Holidays.

Job Purpose

  • To provide and maintain a quality catering service in compliance with food hygiene and safety regulations, according to individual patient needs.
  • The post holder is a working team leader responsible for the direct supervision of all relevant Facilities Staff and to oversee standards.

Duties and Responsibilities

Communication & Working Relationships

  • The post holder will be expected to establish good working relationships with team members to gain confidence, motivation and cooperation.
  • Liaise with Ward Managers/Heads of Department and other relevant staff, patient groups, etc to establish good communications.

Planning & Organisation

  • The post holder will be responsible for the preparation, cooking and dispatch of cooked foods to wards and the staff restaurant.
  • Maintain safe practices during food storage, preparation, cooking, serving and presentation of all food to both patients and staff.
  • Ensure personal hygiene and safe practices are maintained at all times. Ensure illnesses are reported immediately and the necessary action is taken.

Responsibility for Patient/Client Care, Treatment & Therapy

  • Assists patients/clients during incidental contact/provide ancillary services to patients/clients.
  • Provide food information and food advice to patients/clients.

Policy, Service, Research & Development Responsibility

  • The Mental Health Services have an on-going in-service training programme in which the post holder will be expected to participate.
  • To implement policy for own work area and propose changes to working practice in the kitchen environment.

Responsibility for Finance, Equipment & Other Resources

  • The post holder will be expected to control the cost of the Catering Services as directed by the Catering Manager.
  • Order commodities through procedures laid down by the Trust and ensure the quality of goods delivered meet the correct specification,
  • Uphold efficient systems of control in the receipt, issue of goods and control food waste.
  • The post holder will be expected to ensure a safe working environment at all times, reporting faulty equipment and necessary repairs to premises and equipment and ensure accidents are reported.

  • The post holder will be involved in the training of Facilities Assistants (Catering) working in the kitchen in accordance with Trust policies and procedures and the supervision of them when deputising for the Catering Manager, including day to day operational decisions and delegation of work.
  • Ensure implementation of correct cleaning practices is carried out to maintain a hygienic environment.

Information Resources & Administrative Duties

  • The post holder will be expected to complete departmental paperwork in accordance with Trust standing instructions and to record and maintain all records as required in compliance with the 1990 Foods Safety Act and EU Food Hygiene Regulations 2004, along with the Trust policies.
  • Produce staff duty rotas and maintain records as required. Hours to be covered within own timetable if necessary. Plans work of kitchen and adjusts work schedule regularly when deputising for the Catering Manager.

  • To carry out any other reasonable request of the Catering Manager or Facilities Manager.
