Job summary

As the Head of Research Services, the postholder will be a joint leader for the Research & Development (R&D) function for the Devon Partnership NHS Trust.

A core responsibility will be to ensure the robust governance, coordination, and oversight of all research activities. This includes fostering a research-positive culture to enable clinicians, academics, and service users to participate in high-quality, ethically sound, and patient-centred research.

The postholder will ensure compliance with the UK Policy Framework for Health and Social Care Research, NHS research governance standards, and all relevant legislation.

Main duties of the job

In collaboration with the Associate Director of Research & Development, and the Head of Clinical Research Delivery, the postholder will develop our capacity as an organisation to sponsor and host research programmes, manage research approvals and contracts, while also monitoring performance metrics.

Through these activities, they will support the Trust's strategic aims of enhancing mental health outcomes by advancing innovation, embedding evidence-based practice, and promoting a culture of continuous learning

Support the development, planning and lead on the operational implementation of the Devon Partnership Trusts R&D Strategic Delivery Plan,

Lead on the development of a cohesive and integrated portfolio of well-managed, high-quality research that reflects NHS priorities, for the Trust and its research collaboration partners.

Maximise the potential of commercial and non-commercial R&D sponsors and organisations.

To oversee the implementation of research governance standards in line with the Department of Health, NIHR, RRDN, HRA and other relevant guidance.

Initiate, develop and take forward the introduction and maintenance of research quality and governance systems across the Devon Partnership NHS Trust

To oversee the maintenance of the R&D information systems EDGE and project databases ensuring that it represents a comprehensive and accurate record of the Trust's R&D portfolio.

Achieving the timely submissions of various returns to the RRDN, the NIHR and other funding bodies.

Develop and produce an annual R&D Plan containing all necessary detail for managing and delivering research; monitoring, reviewing and modifying this as necessary.

Evaluate and interpret the extent to which various legislations, policies and procedures internal and external to the organisation relate to the R&D Office and implement these appropriately.

Work with Academic and Trust partners to establish a mental health joint research office. To ensure the appropriate management of the RRDN, commercial research and contract research income, in liaison with the Trusts finance departments

To develop, integrate, plan, provide and negotiate resources financial and physical across the Trusts to support and develop collaborative research activity.

To assist in establishing mechanisms and guidelines to enable tracking of research costs.

Confirming C&C and signing Hon Contracts and research contracts such as OIDs and MNCAs as per the level of delegated authority.

Manages all team finance including RDN return and QFASTOXs, study level finance and Excess Treatment Costs.

Provides leadership in specialist areas and is required to interpret national policy and or guidance. Initiates action to ensure implementation at organisational level.

Senior management for Clinical Governance Team in line with legal governance, government guidelines and legislation.
