Job summary

Consultant Psychiatrist Exeter West CMHT & Place of Safety

Devon Partnership Trust invites applications for a Consultant Psychiatrist to join the Exeter West Community Mental Health Team (CMHT, 6PAs) and the Place of Safety (Wonford House Hospital, 4PAs) in the General Adult Directorate. This full-time post supports patients aged 18-65, though part-time/job-share applicants are welcome.

The Trust, based in the beautiful county of Devon, offers a great work-life balance surrounded by stunning landscapes. We support agile working, including hybrid remote arrangements, and offer extra programmed activities for research, teaching, medical management, and other interests.

The post is based at Wonford House, Exeter, where you'll have a private office, IT access, and dedicated secretarial support. You will oversee a caseload of 300 patients, conducting 12-15 medical assessments per week. Additionally, you will provide Responsible Clinician cover for the Devon-wide Place of Safety, supporting detained patients awaiting placement.

This role suits first-time NHS consultants, experienced psychiatrists, or international applicants, with Approved Clinician status preferred but training provided if required.

We offer mentorship, peer support, electronic record systems, and 2.5 SPAs weekly for professional development.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will offer assessment, diagnosis and treatment of patients being managed by the Exeter West CMHT, as well as other expert clinical services in support of patients and their families/carers as necessary. They will also provide leadership to the wider CMHT and participate in ensuring the care flow of patients through the Trust is efficient and patient centred.

The successful applicant will also provide Responsible Clinician cover for patients in the Wonford House Place of Safety, for patients already detained under section 2 or section 3 who remain in POS for few days while awaiting a bed to become available in another inpatient unit. This includes initial assessment, followed by treatment planning, and mental health act responsibilities, such as section 17 leave arrangements. The average length of stay in POS for these patients is 2-3 days. The amount of time that will be needed weekly to support these patients will be based on need, according to the number of patients in POS waiting for a bed elsewhere. Three DCC PAs are allocated to this activity which amounts to 12 hours per week. It may be necessary that the Consultant will need to attend the POS daily, in working weekdays, for 1-2 hours

You will take part in on-call rota and other consultants from the area will be expected to provide cross-cover for leave.
