Job summary

Our vocational rehabilitation service is nestled into a rural hillside overlooking Exminster and the Exe Estuary. Here we offer people who are struggling with their mental health, opportunities to engage in new experiences and to build their confidence and skill set with the aim of moving into paid employment or volunteering.

Due to retirement, we are seeking a Woodwork technical instructor at New Leaf, to take over the role of overseeing the Woodworks department.

The Woodworks technical instructor is responsible for the day to day running of the comprehensive Woodworks department and supervises clients in the use of carpentry, hand and machine tools.

This offers people who are attending an opportunity to develop skills and confidence in a new area of interest or further develop and refresh older skills.

A compassionate and motivational approach with people who may have low esteem is essential as is patience and the ability to problem solve.

You will be fairly autonomous and have a creative flair for contributing to product development, commercial sales and sourcing of raw materials as well as assisting with the delivery of orders and the installation of commercial items at times.

As a small team we pride ourselves on being supportive and flexible so we are looking for a team player who has strong communication and collaboration skills with a positive attitude towards the role.

Main duties of the job

The main aims of the role are to support people with mental health challenges identify and achieve their recovery goals in order to move into volunteering or paid employment.

  • Supporting individuals to develop self esteem, confidence and skills within a practical working environment.
  • Utilise expert woodworking /carpentry skills to teach people using the service to develop their woodworking skills.
  • Overseeing the health and safety practices within the department.
  • To lead on client reviews, assessing progress throughout the placement.
  • Directly supervise individuals on placement and oversee quality of work carried out.
  • Contribute to the commercial income at New Leaf through the development and production of woodwork items.
  • Supervise a small group of woodwork volunteers.

The role of a Technical Instructor [TI] is to support and enable people who may have a broad range of mental health challenges to engage in the activities and processes that form part of the day to day vocational rehabilitation experience. A TI will be expected to provide guidance and instruction around tasks and mentor people on vocational placement at New Leaf toward meeting their individual goals on a recovery focused pathway.

The post holder will support the commercial industry at New Leaf through the production of items for sale and when required provide support to the other departments that together form the commercial core of vocational services at New Leaf.

  • NVQ Level 3 and equivalent level of knowledge or equivalent qualification in woodworking practice.
