An exciting opportunity to join the team initially at the Additional Support Unit (ASU) in Exeter for Adults with a Learning Disability and then at the new Regional Learning Disability and Autism Unit in Dawlish from mid-2025.

The ASU Ward provides high quality care and treatment for people who have learning disabilities and complex mental health needs. You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team to support the assessment and treatment of adults with a learning disability on the unit.

The new regional service based in Dawlish will offer inpatient support to both adults with a learning disability and autistic adults. The building and environment will be state of the art and the service aims to become a centre of excellence

Main duties of the job

To provide specialist clinical input into the delivery of care and treatment at the Additional Support Unit/LDA unit.

To lead in area of clinical expertise across the Additional Support Unit/LDA unit.

Clinically Supervise as appropriate, qualified and unqualified staff and students working within the Additional Support Unit/LDA.

To provide evidence based clinical support and advice to other members of the multidisciplinary team.

To lead and promote education and staff development for the continued professional growth of the team members and students.

Good negotiation skills to manage conflict in a range of situations within clinical specialism and teams.

Support Key relationships with other Clinical and professional leads across the unit, Clinical team managers and a variety of colleagues and professionals within this and other organisations, Service users, carers and families and agencies supporting the service user.

To ensure effective methods and systems are in place to facilitate communication with all members of the multidisciplinary team, between ward-based team members, ward members and other areas of the Trust and wider network.

Attendance at meetings to provide clinical specialism within the Additional Support Unit/LDA unit as required.

Attendance, participation and organisation at regional special interest groups e.g. Sensory Integration, Positive Behaviour Support, Trauma Informed Care.

Assess to understand and interpret a range of complex clinical conditions and diagnosis including causes of distressed behavior. Analyse and interpret service development issues within the teams. Highly developed specialist knowledge of Clinical lead area and working with people with Learning Disability and Neurodiversity needs within inpatient settings.

Plan and organise complex client activities which require formulation and adjustment.

Practice effective time management to respond to competing priorities, balancing a clinical caseload.

Work in conjunction with the other clinical leads on the unit and team managers to plan and manage a sustainable and effective service delivery.

Organise meetings and groups to support clinical work and continuing professional development for the inpatient team. Manage relevant research projects.

To develop, deliver and evaluate training packages to a range of audiences.

To manage projects to support development of clinical understanding across the multidisciplinary team and support wider service needs as identified.

Reflect on own practice.

Ability to describe where and how interventions related to area of clinical specialism need to be prioritised and how these can be delivered as part of a multidisciplinary intervention.

To make sound judgments in a timely manner.

To manage and effectively prioritise clinical work in assessing, implementing, monitoring and evaluating highly specialist clinical treatment programmes as part of overall care in meeting the needs of people with complex distressed behaviour, additional mental health issues, sensory or physical impairments and profound and complex needs.

To advise the Service Manager ASU/LDA on service pressures and clinical risks.

Responsible for ensuring that the requirements of the Mental Health Act 1983 and 2005 are observed, implemented and adhered to. Responsible for ensuring that the requirements of the Mental Capacity Act are observed, implemented and adhered to.

Up to date with clinical practice and research through attendance at appropriate courses, special interest groups, use of evidence base. Support complex clients and staff teams during transitions.

Assess and review levels of risk as part of the assessment process enabling individuals with complex distressed behaviour and additional mental health issues to engage with treatment programmes.

Ensure all practice is the least restrictive.

Contribute to policies and procedures for clinical specialist area. Awareness of development needs of the inpatient team and create development opportunities according to clinical and business priorities and professional standards.

Create and promote clinical care pathways based on best practice within the ASU/LDA.

Develop protocols for specialised area.

Support ASU/LDA staff to use relevant theoretical frameworks for clinical practice.

  • Professional knowledge acquired through degree in Nursing/OT/SALT/Physiotherapy/ supplemented by post graduate diploma specialist training, experience, short courses plus further specialist training to masters equivalent level.
