Job summary
This is a new substantive post to provide medical support to the
Liaison Psychiatry team in Exeter. The doctor will support the medical
assessment and management of the team for patients attending Royal Devon and
Exeter Hospital (Wonford).
The potholders responsibilities will
be to provide psychiatric services to Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital (Wonford).
The work is multidisciplinary both within the Liaison Team and with external
colleagues.
The work is under support and supervision
of Dr Merryn Anderson, and Dr Tom Smith Consultant Psychiatrists.
The role involves work alongside the
Foundation doctors, Core Trainees and Speciality Trainee Doctors who provide
support for the service though also need clinical supervision at times.
The post holder
will have a commitment to collaborative working and actively supporting and
liaising with other health and social professionals and agencies as well as
have good relationships with mental health services.
The post is a
pilot and is initially an 18 month fixed term appointment.
The
appointment is at Specialty Doctor Grade with salary thresholds from £52,530 rising by ten thresholds to a maximum of £82,400 per annum, for full time 10
sessions.
Main duties of the job
We are interested in recruiting an
enthusiastic and dedicated Specialty Doctor who is interested in shaping the
future in terms of their career and the provision of services. The post holder
is expected to help promote mental health throughout the general hospital. We
would look for a patient centred approach but also one which involves the
general hospital in joint care.
The ability to liaise with
clinicians, managers, other psychiatric teams and relatives is a key part of
the role.
Assessment of patients who are
acutely psychiatrically unwell who also need physical health treatment provides
a challenging yet highly variable and rewarding environment. We see patients
above the age of 18, both general adult and older adults.
There is a large mix of patients with
diagnoses from depression, anxiety, emotionally unstable personality disorder,
crisis presentations of BPAD and Schizophrenia. We also work alongside other
services such as the people with Learning Disability Service, Perinatal Service
and Eating Disorders service whilst a patient is in hospital. We also see some
patients who simply have a hospital specific problem and need help to navigate
the system or have reasonable adjustments e.g. people with autism. There is a
large amount of knowledge in the team and a good deal of support, the variety
listed is to give a sense of the variety of clinical interest.
It would be desirable for the
candidate to have Section 12 approval to help with acute presentations.
