Senior Occupational Therapist

Devon Partnership NHS Trust

The closing date is 09 October 2024

Job summary

Are you looking for something completely new, different, exhilarating and challenging?

We are looking for a Senior OT to join the Outside the Box (OTB) Team, part of the Offender Personality Disorder (OPD) Pathway.

The OPD pathway is based in prisons and probation, with NHS and HMPPS staff working together to increase the wellbeing and reduce the risk of those screened into the pathway, whilst also upskilling the knowledge and attitudes of wider staff working to allow a more psychologically informed and relational approach to rehabilitation.

OTB is an intervention and consultation service for those screened into the pathway who are stuck in the system (e.g. not able to engage, multiple releases and recalls) or displaying behaviours that mean they arent able to access other services that would benefit them. The service provides individual and group interventions with a focus on the relational. This includes developing a shared formulation and goals with each person on caseload, as well as pro-social groups (e.g. gardening, bee-keeping), psycho-educational groups (e.g. healthy self-esteem), skills groups (DBT skills) and more therapeutic groups (e.g. MBT).

The role is dynamic and works within a cohesive, motivated and enthusiastic team including Prison Officers, Psychologists, Assistant Psychologists and an Arts Therapist. There's lots of space given to supervision, reflective practice & opportunities for training, in acknowledgement of how challenging this work can be.

Main duties of the job

The role is still developing but will include leading on the OT element of the service, developing and implementing occupational groups and meaningful activity, supervising and working with a Band 5 OT, consulting with other members of the team regarding OT needs of those on caseload (e.g. thinking about sensory profiles), holding a caseload & working in a psychologically-informed way to develop formulations/goals.

You will be working in an enthusiastic team made up of Prison Officers, Governors and Clinical Staff alike. It is important that the team work cohesively and effectively together. The service dedicates time to team development and you will participate in this through reflective practice, team activities, & mindfulness sessions.

You will often work autonomously, so we are looking for someone confident and capable. You will need excellent communication, reflection and critical appraisal skills as workingwithin a prison setting can be challenging, therefore it is important that you utilise supervision and reflective practice to support your own wellbeing.

This role comes with a unique opportunity for OT staff to link in with the OPD pathways national network of OT professionals which offers support and a chance to be creative with sharing of ideas.

There is scope for training within the service to support your development in the role.

There are currently a number of animal-assisted therapeutic activities in the service including three therapy dogs and a tortoise.
