Job summary

This is a great opportunity to join our nursing therapy team at one of the country’s most respected providers of secure mental health services. As a Deputy Ward Manager for the Secure Services Directorate, you will hold a key post in our recovery pathway, providing direct nursing care and also engaging in a range of therapeutic interventions including DBT and CAT interventions.

We provide forensic mental health services for the south west region and have an excellent reputation. Our Directorate employs over 320 staff and we have ambitious plans in place to expand and develop our existing services.

We support people who, as a consequence of their mental health needs, have had contact with the criminal justice system and require a safe and secure environment that enables them to receive a wide range of treatments, therapies and care to support their recovery. Recovery is at the heart of everything we do - it is about people building a meaningful life and represents a shift away from focusing on illness and symptoms towards a focus on personal health, strengths and wellness.

Main duties of the job

Responsible for the assessment of care needs, and the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care without supervision, take charge regularly of a ward or equivalent sphere of nursing in the absence of the Ward Manager.

Organise and maintain regular staff meetings and participate in nursing or multidisciplinary meetings and discussions as required. Report any complaints, grievances or unusual occurrences to the Ward Manager in accordance with agreed Trust procedures.

As a coordinating Band 6 professional, supervise and monitor the nurse teams and other unqualified staff. Maintain an effective and safe shift pattern schedule. Promote and develop high standards of clinical care.

Have an ongoing awareness of clinical risk, advising and leading clinicians on actions to be taken to respond to risk. Deploy nursing staff within their area of responsibility, according to the daily needs of the Service, supervising and monitoring all aspects of their work

Be aware of the security policies and procedures in place for their area of responsibility with regard for the safety and wellbeing of patients, staff and visitors.

Responsible for the administration of medication in accordance with NMC guidelines and Trust policies and procedures, maintain confidentiality on all matters relating to patient care.
