Job summary

We are seeking a Clinical or Counselling Psychologist or Arts Therapist or other Psychotherapist to take up a substantive role in the Adult Mental Health Specialism. The successful applicant will be based with Psychology and Psychological Therapy term that supports secondary community mental health services in Torbay and the wider South Devon area. We are a friendly and committed department with a strong values base around promoting and upholding psychological approaches to mental distress. The psychology and psychological therapies service has a range of therapists and applied psychologists working within it and offers group, individual and family intervention in a variety of models including Arts Therapies, CBT based approaches, CAT and other integrative and relational approaches, as well as some dedicated group work services.

The post holder will link with the wider adult mental health teams within Devon Partnership NHS Trust, providing specialist psychological assessments and therapy, for individuals, groups and families as well as team consultations, formulations, and the supervision of staff. As a member of the clinical team the successful applicant will support the Professional lead on issues of clinical governance, evaluation and the management of waiting lists.

Creative innovations and collaborations in skill sharing, and training are blossoming through the Community Mental Health Framework.

Main duties of the job

This is a permanentfull time (37.5 hours per week) position,open to applied psychologists, psychotherapists, or psychological therapists registered with an appropriate body. The successful applicant will join the Torbay Psychology and Psychological Therapy (PPT) team, a part of the wider South Devon PPT team and be managed by the Torbay PPT Professional Lead. They will mainly be based in the locality, working with and alongside the local Core Mental Health, Assessment and Wellbeing Teams and PCN Mental Health Team.

The team is friendly and committed, with shared strong values acknowledging the social and psychological determinants of emotional distress, developing Psychologically Informed Environments and Trauma-Informed Services. The service offers group, individual and family interventions in a range of models. We support each other through supervision, CPD events, team meetings and reflective practice groups. We have good links with local D Clin Psy and D Couns Psych training courses and M.Sc trainees in family therapy.

CPD is available through a number of routes. Individuals and teams can make applications for training bursaries and we have recently been able to support applicants for accrediting therapy trainings. CPD is also available through HEE funded trainings and these have included Family Therapy, MBT, EMDR and DBT.

The principal purpose of the job is to improve the psychological health & wellbeing of people within the post holders specialist field of practice.

This will be achieved in this post through undertaking the following areas of responsibility:

1. Providing a Clinical/Counselling Psychology or Psychotherapy service to people referred to the PPT service as a key component of services provided by Devon Partnership Trust

2. Providing local clinical leadership, co-ordination and supervision for trainees and volunteers employed by or attached to the psychology service, under the general direction and supervision of the Professional Lead

3. Carrying a specialist caseload of clients, and providing advice and consultancy to patients, family members, carers and professionals.

4. To provide clinical supervision and consultation to the wider community mental health teams in the locality as part of integrated mental health team working.

5. The post holder will be supported by senior colleagues within their specialist field. The post holder will be expected to make good use of the expertise of others within the service to further develop their clinical skills with this client group.

6. To work autonomously within professional guidelines and exercise responsibility for the systematic governance of psychological practice within the service / local team.

7. The post holder will receive regular professional and clinical supervision in accordance to Trust policy and to Professional Practice Guidelines set out by the British Psychological Society or appropriate designated Professional Body. Observe, and abide by all relevant Professional Codes of Conduct and Practise including the British Psychological Society. Communication and Working Relationships

Clients, family and carers: To communicate in a highly skilled and sensitive manner with clients who may have specific difficulties in understand and/or communicating and who may be hostile, antagonistic or highly emotionally disturbed.

Multidisciplinary team colleagues: To work closely with colleagues in the multi-professional integrated mental health and wellbeing service on a day to day basis.

Health & social care staff: To communicate with a wide range of health & social care staff in hospital and in community settings in a highly skilled and sensitive manner, complex and sensitive information concerning the assessment, formulation and treatment plans of clients under the services care. To provide support & guidance in the application of psychological principles and techniques, and to foster reflective practice.

Senior managers & professional staff: To maintain and build good working relationships with senior professional staff and managers across the Psychology and Therapy service and in DPT to foster a positive approach to the integrated mental health and wellbeing service and to enable effective negotiation.

Planning and Organisation

The service: To plan and prioritise own workload, balancing the demands of patient care, support and guidance of carers and professionals and service research and development activities.

To contribute to the planning and organising of the psychology and therapy services within the locality area and to contribute to the development and improvement of provision of psychological services within services to best meet the organisations strategy and priorities.

The multidisciplinary service: To provide psychology/therapy knowledge to the multi-professional planning, development and marketing of mental health and wellbeing services.

To provide psychological therapies/other therapies, developing specialist psychological formulations and assessments of clients, formulating plans for their psychological treatment and implementing specialist psychological interventions for individuals, carers, families and groups.

To support the Professional Head, General Manager, Practice and Strategic Development Leads and Professional Leads by undertaking service development and redesign projects and coordinating the resulting work within the team.
