Job summary

MBU Outreach Service Nursery Nurse - 0.8 wte (30 hours per week)

The Mother and Baby Unit (MBU) Outreach Service provides assessment and intensive support/treatment of women who would otherwise be admitted to our MBU - Jasmine Lodge, and facilitates early discharge from the MBU in order to prevent relapse and readmission.

Our MBU Outreach Service offers assessment and treatment of the mothers mental illness whilst ensuring the developing relationship with their baby, this role working with mums predominantly in Devon however the service works across Cornwall, Devon and Somerset.

The service works with mums who are experiencing a severe episode of mental illness. This includes mums who might benefit from an admission to our Mother and Baby Unit (MBU) - Jasmine Lodge - and require additional support.

Jasmine Lodge is located in Exeter and the practitioners from our Outreach Service are based across Devon, Cornwall and Somerset. They work collaboratively with other local health services to ensure mums and their families receive joined-up care, when and where they need it. Our service also includes access to a perinatal consultant psychiatrist, specialist doctor and clinical pharmacist.

Main duties of the job

  • The role of the Outreach Service Nursery Nurse will be to provide a cohesive, team working approach with the mother, baby and family at the centre of the service delivered.
  • To demonstrate a sound knowledge of caring effectively for infants under 1 year old and to share these skills with women and their families open to our service.
  • To ensure current practice and care reflects standards as outlined in the Trusts Safeguarding Policies alongside the Devon Safeguarding Children Board Procedures, to engage with specialist safeguarding services as and when necessary.
  • To assist in the management and organisation of work as required.
  • To support the development of mothers, carers and colleagues in the Outreach Team in their knowledge and skills in caring for infants.
  • To work in partnership with team members, providing support and evidence-based advice inall areas of care for babies in the community whose mothers are open to the Outreach team.
  • Ensure that each mothers involvement is fully promoted in all baby care.
  • Support engagement with the aim ofsharing and educating in all areas of baby/infant care and play when required.
  • Provide written and verbal reports to the multi-disciplinary team and externalagencies relating to mothers interactions with their baby/infant.
  • Communicate sensitive information to mothers and/or relatives/carers relevant to theirprofessional knowledge and qualification.
  • Attend meetings to represent Nursery Nursing as necessary and feedback information.

  • Use clinical judgement on problems requiring investigation regarding baby/infant wellbeing.
  • Being able to initiate referrals onto appropriate specialist services as indicated by the wellbeing needs of the baby/infant.
  • Assess and manage risk associated with the working environment ensuring appropriate Trust policies and procedures are followed accordingly.
  • To update knowledge and skills in line with NNEB (Nursery Nurse Examination Board) or equivalent.
  • Comply with legal requirements relating to the care of babies/infants in a mental health setting & Safeguarding Children Procedures.

Planning and Organisational Skills

  • Effectively organise and prioritise own diary in collaboration with Outreach Practitioner colleagues.
  • Ensure identified follow-up regarding baby/infant care as decided in clinical reviews are completed and information available in a timely manner.

Responsibility for Patient/Client/baby/infant Care, Treatment and Therapy

  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate evidence based interventions appropriate to baby/infant development and able to be facilitated within the timescale of the MBU Outreach episode.
  • Promote the importance of each childs background and individual cultural needs.
  • Take an active part in team discussion and decisions relating to the parent/infant dyad in respect of care and treatment and ensure these are carried out or reviewed as required.
  • To engage in assessments and developing care plans reflect the psychological, emotional, social care, treatment/intervention, risk management and physical healthcare of the baby/infant.
  • To provide a nursery nursing perspective and representation in multidisciplinary team reviews and care planning meetings.
