Job summary

Health Education England is funding seven Trainee Health Psychologists to explore the contribution and impact health psychology can make in supporting the NHS to achieve its workforce transformation and redesign goals as part of an exciting pilot programme.

This advert is for the post in the South West region which will be hosted by Devon Partnership Trust.

Workforce transformation is a process, driven by improving the way we recruit, retain, deploy, develop and continue to support the healthcare workforce, to meet the growing and changing needs of local populations, ensuring high quality care for the patients of today and in the future.

The post is two year fixed term and will allow the trainee Health Psychologist to gain experience working within health and care whilst also completing the British Psychological Societys Stage 2 Training.

Applicants should hold a Stage 1 qualification in Health Psychology at Merit level or above (MSc). A good honours Degree in Psychology (2:1 or equivalent recognised conversion level) is required, as is BPS Graduate Basis for Chartership (GBC).

Please note that the HEE psychological professions funding rule will apply to anyone recruited to this programme, meaning that they will only be eligible for further HEE training funding two years after completion of the qualifying exam board in the original training.

Main duties of the job

Candidates will demonstrate knowledge of Health Psychology theory (including COM-B and the behaviour change wheel) and a clear understanding of its application to the objectives of the NHS, particularly those related to workforce transformation and redesign.

Candidates will work closely with the Head of Staff Health and Wellbeing to develop and deliver three main programmes of work;

  • building line manager capability and confidence in supporting staff health and wellbeing.
  • domestic abuse support programme
  • bystander interventions in the workplace

Knowledge of the NHS Long Term Plan and People Plan, the ICS/ICB infrastructure across England, and an interest in workforce and staff health and wellbeing will be advantageous. Any previous experience of working within the NHS or wider health and social care system would also be beneficial.

Excellent written and oral communication skills are essential, with a strong emphasis on establishing a rapport and working relationships across a range of internal and external stakeholders. You will be expected to work independently at times, plan and organise work autonomously, balancing the needs of Stage 2 Training with a day to day workload. Excellent organisational, timekeeping and IT skills are therefore essential.
