Job summary

The Offending Behaviour Intervention Service (OBIS) is a small, highly-specialised multi-disciplinary team and is a function of HPFT Herts Specialist learning disabilities Service (SLDS). OBIS provides interventions to reduce risk for service users aged 18 years and over with learning disabilities and a history of offending, or who are at risk of offending that would cause significant harm to themselves or others.

We have a vacancy for a band 6 registered learning disability or mental health nurse to join the OBIS team. The successful candidate will have experience in the fields of working in community learning disability/ adult mental health services and/ or ATU and/or forensic inpatient practice in the assessment and treatment of offenders with learning disabilities. The successful candidate will have highly developed knowledge and skills in risk assessment and management planning and in multi disciplinary practices. They will be supported to continue to develop their knowledge, skills and experience working in the community forensic field with people who have learning disabilities through the provision of excellent professional supervision, clinical practice and CPD opportunities. Main duties of the job

  • Specialist risk assessment and management.
  • Early intervention and advice, where risk behaviour is evident, but no offence has taken place.
  • Individual and group offence-specific interventions aimed at reducing offending (including sexual offences; violent and aggressive offences and fire setting).
  • Liaison, advice and joint working with the local legal system, including police, MAPPA, probation service and the MDO panel.
  • Advice and support and training to mainstream learning disability services on the safe management of people in the community.

The team has demonstrated that we provide an extremely cost effective alternative to a stay in a secure hospital or specialist forensic 24/7 community based packages of care.

Through the commissioning of OBIS, Hertfordshire Transforming Care Partnership have made a major contribution to developing the thinking around community forensic provision for service users with a learning disability. OBIS has gained a reputation nationally as a trail-blazer in design and delivery of a community forensic services for adults with learning disabilities, and is frequently consulted by people looking to set up similar services in other areas of the country.
