Job summary
An exciting and challenging opportunity has arisen for a Health and Safety officer (part-time) within the Trust's Health and Safety Team. The successful applicant will work within the Health and Safety Team and Safer Care Team to support managers at all levels and across all areas of the organisation in improving health and safety standards.
As a qualified health and safety practitioner, you will be a Graduate or Chartered member of IOSH or equivalent qualification, you will have an in-depth working knowledge of current health and safety issues and the underpinning legislation to enable you to provide competent advice.
The ideal individual for this post will have a proven track record advising on Health and Safety and violence, and security matters in the public healthcare sector or equivalent and the ability to work autonomously to support clinical and corporate services in identifying realistic solutions to health and safety issues.
The role will be predominantly based at 99 Waverley Road in St Albans or Lexden Colchester. There is a need to travel between sites and access to your own transport is essential.
Main duties of the job
The Safety Advisor will support Trust wide with the effective delivery and development of Health and Safety and security to ensure that a consistent approach to Health and Safety and security is taken, underpinned by standardised processes and protocols
The post holder will contribute to operational services delivery in their area which meets the Trusts objectives and targets and will ensure the Trust complies with all statutory requirements in terms of Health and Safety and ensuring continuous improvement within monitoring of data and audits.

- Proactively raise awareness of health and safety issues and to provide practical and positive support to managers in fulfilling their responsibilities for health and safety by providing information and guidance for services.
- Participate in the development, monitoring, auditing and reviewing of health and safety related policies and procedures within the organisation, under the general guidance of the Health, Safety and Security Manager (e.g. COSHH, First Aid, Display Screen Equipment etc.)
- Produce reports following health and safety audits for managers and ensure actions are implemented and reviewed in relation to the appropriate geography.
- Undertake Environmental Risk Assessments /Checklists with relevant staff as and when required
- Investigate health and safety related incidents. Report and record all Reportable Injuries and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (RIDDORs) to the Health and Safety Executive as required.
- Investigate security related incidents and support managers and staff post V&A incidents.
- To keep staff safe and secure by protecting staff from violence and the Trusts property and assets from theft and criminal damage
- To ensure information and intelligence derived from security incidents and breaches are fed into risk analysis both locally and nationally, so that preventative measures can be developed.
- To undertake fit testing when required.
- Provide advice and support in the use of the lone worker devices.
- To provide managers with support and advice in the development of health and safety risk assessments as required.
- Monitor Health and Safety incidents and escalate when appropriate. Identify any immediate actions. Support teams in addressing the learning from the review of incidents.
