Job summary

We are looking to appoint a Specialty Doctor in Intellectual Disabilities Psychiatry.

The Learning Disability service stream provides specialist health care to adults with learning disabilities in Hertfordshire. The total population of Hertfordshire is approximately 1.2 million people . The Multidisciplinary Teams in Hertfordshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust is commissioned to provide direct specialist health services for adults with learning disabilities

  • Intensive support nursing
  • Arts therapies
  • Speech and language therapy
  • Loss and bereavement counselling
  • Sexuality support counselling
  • Offending Behaviour Intervention Service (Community Forensic Learning Disability Team)
  • Positive Partnerships Team providing training to carers and to assist with implementation of PBS plans in community settings.
  • Community Based Forensic Learning Disabilities Service (OBIS Team).
  • Inpatient Services on Kingfisher Court, Radlett.

Main duties of the job

Principal Duties - under supervision of the Consultant Psychiatrist

  • Provision of psychiatric expertise to the community learning disability team and the community intensive support service.
  • To undertake outpatient clinics, home visits and participate in multidisciplinary case discussions.
  • Attend Care Programme Approach meetings.
  • To liaise effectively with primary care and mainstream mental health services.
  • To have regular clinical supervision with the consultant psychiatrist. It is the post holder's responsibility to ensure that this is booked.

Specific duties for outpatients and community work:

All new referrals require a full psychiatric history and mental state examination. In order to get a comprehensive history this may require more than one appointment, a home visit and information gathering from carers, family and other professionals. Once the assessment is completed it must be written up in the standard format and discussed with the Consultant Psychiatrist. The GP must be kept informed of the progress of the assessment. Follow up appointments require a letter to the GP using the standard format. This will include ICD 10 diagnosis, current medication, any changes to medication and capacity to consent to treatment. There must be a clear recommendation about management and follow up arrangements.

Cases should be discussed with the Consultant during clinical supervision.

  • Fully registered medical practitioner with the General Medical Council (GMC)

  • MRCPsych OR MRCPsych equivalent approved by the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
  • A diploma in Psychiatry or MRCPsych or equivalent.

Clinical Skills, Knowledge & Experience

  • At least 6 months experience in Learning Disabilities .With at least 2 years' experience in a psychiatry training scheme.
  • Experience of working in community settings in Learning Disabilities.
  • Ability to work well in Multidisciplinary teams.
  • Excellent clinical skills using bio-psycho-social perspective and wide medical knowledge.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
  • Able to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty
  • Able to meet duties under MHA and MCA.
