Job summary

We are seeking a highly motivated, and experienced Band 7 Speech & Language Therapist to provide communication and dysphagia assessment and intervention for service users within Herts Secure Learning Disability and Mental Health Units. The two secure and one medium secure units provide high levels of assessment and intervention to service users with mental health, intellectual and other developmental disabilities detained under the Mental Health Act.

This post offers the exciting opportunity to work within a developing area of Speech and Language Therapy, offering services to people with complex and enduring problems, including criminal offending. The person successful in their application will be an essential member of the MDT team, working alongside Medical, Nursing, OT, Psychology and Social Work colleagues to enable service users to recognise areas of difficulty (both in communication and dysphagia), develop effective skills and participate in therapeutic interventions.

The post offers good links with SLT colleagues throughout HPFT services, with regular supervision, opportunities for CPD and training. There is a strong ethos of Continuous Quality Improvement throughout the service and the Trust as a whole, overall creating possibilities for developing and extending knowledge and skills

Main duties of the job

To manage a caseload, using evidence based person centred principles to assess, plan, implement and evaluate

To provide assessment/interventions to service users within Herts secure services who present with communication challenges and identify those with dysphagia needs

To work as a member of the multidisciplinary team

To assess, diagnose and develop treatment plans for service users within Herts secure services, including those with: profound learning disabilities, additional sensory and/.or physical disability, mental health diagnosis and/or challenging behaviours

To assess, diagnose and develop treatment plans for service users presenting with dysphagia

To be responsible for managing a defined caseload, in the context of the service caseload, with ongoing evaluation of clinical

To work with and be available to other SLT's and generic technicians for support and joint consultation regarding clinical practice as

To plan and implement individual interventions, in collaboration with the service user and carer

QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION/TRAINING

Essential

  • Degree in Speech and Language Therapy
  • State registration with HCPC
  • Member of the RCSLT
  • Evidence of continuing professional development

Desirable

  • Post graduate training in Learning Disabilities, Challenging behaviour and/ or Mental Health
  • Post graduate training in Dysphagia

PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE
