Job summary

We are seeking an experienced and enthusiastic Emergency Nurse Practitioner (ENP) to join our Minor Injury Unit (MIU). This is an exciting opportunity for a highly skilled practitioner to join our nurse led team.

As a band 7 ENP in the MIU, you will be a key member of the clinical team, delivering safe, effective, and patient centred care. You will utilise advanced clinical decision making and prescribing skills (PGD) to manage patients independently, whilst also working closely with colleagues across urgent and emergency care pathways. In addition you will provide visible leadership, supporting junior staff, students and colleagues in developing their practice.

Our Minor Injury Unit plays a vital role in delivering urgent care closer to home for our local community. We see a wide variety of presentations, ranging from musculoskeletal injuries and wounds to minor head injuries, burns, simple fractures and eye problems.

Main duties of the job

Key Duties include:

Providing autonomous assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients attending the MIU with minor injuries.

Order and interpret appropriate investigations (e.g: Xrays) and prescribe safely using PGD's.

Deliver evidence based care, including wound management, musculoskeletal assessment, plastering and suturing.

Provide safe and effective discharge planning, safety netting and referral where necessary.

Act as a clinical leader within the MIU, supervising juniofr staff, students, and members or the multidisciplinary team.

Copntribute tgo audit, service devlopment, and quality improvement initiatives to enmhance patient outcomes and service delivery.

The Emergency Nurse/Care Practitioner will work as an autonomous clinician with in a nurse led Minor Injury Unit without reference to a doctor, providing expert assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients presenting with minor injuries. He/she will be part of a team of nursing, medical and allied professionals leading in the delivery of a high-quality service to patients presenting with lower acuity illness and injury.

Act as a clinical leader, providing supervision, mentorship, and education to junior colleagues and students.

Contribute to service development, audit, research, and quality improvement to enhance patient outcomes and service efficiency.

Key Duties:

Clinical Responsibilities

Undertake autonomous assessment, diagnose, treatment, and management of patients presenting with minor injuries

Order and interpret appropriate investigations (e.g., Xrays, wound swabs, ECGs)

Prescribe safely and appropriately under independent/non-medical prescribing authority or PGD guidance.

Provide effective patient education, safety-netting, and discharge planning.

Recognise, initiate, and escalate care for patients requiring urgent or emergency intervention.

Ensure accurate documentation and use of clinical IT systems in line with Trust policy

Will develop and consistently maintain a philosophy for the treatment service.

Will work closely with the Department Manager and Matron in developing the role of the Emergency Nurse practitioner.

Will develop, implement and monitor guidelines, standards, policies, protocols/care pathways.

Will develop excellent working relationships with all members of the Emergency Care team.

Will continue to develop expertise in practice and promote KGH MIU as a centre of excellence in nursing practice.

Will provide clinical support and advice to all members of the Emergency Care team. Will support the key quality indicators ensuring 15-minute triage times and 4 hr breaches are met and assist with initial assessment of all patients in MIU.

The Emergency Nurse/Care Practitioner will exercise his/her level of judgement in the management and further care of patients within his/her scope of practice.

Maintain a high profile in the clinical area act as a role model for other health care professionals.

The post holder will analyse relevant performance data and produce and implement improvement plans and audits to monitor an improve performance to feedback to the Department Manager.

Will be part of the emergency responder and hospital bleep holder team.
