Stroke Lead Speech & Language Therapist

Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated and experienced SLT to lead our stroke rehabilitation team. You will be well supported within our friendly team by peers, and the SLT Manager. The post holder will provide specialist assessment and intervention for adults with acquired communication and swallowing disorders following stroke within the acute service. There will also be opportunity to work closely with SLT's in community pathways.

You will play a key role in delivering a high-quality, evidence-based service, taking a lead on development and supporting junior staff and students. This role requires strong clinical leadership, multidisciplinary collaboration, and a commitment to person-centred care. FEES and videofluoroscopy skills preferred, but training can be given in this area if needed. There are opportunities to develop your research skills.

The SLT department is currently undergoing an integration with Community services. This will provide exciting opportunities to develop services with patient needs at the core, across traditional boundaries. You will play a key role in shaping services for stroke patients.

The postholder is likely to work at the Alexandra Hospital at times, including the transfer of equipment. The post holder will need to meet the travel demands of the service.

Main duties of the job

To provide leadership to a team of therapists responsible for the care of stroke and TIA patients who are in-patients in Worcestershire Royal Hospital and the Alexandra Hospital in Redditch.

To act as lead clinician for the Stroke service in the provision of inpatient care at WRH, ensuring equitable access to SLT across both Acute Stoke Unit and outlying patients.

To act as a highly specialist clinician, providing advanced expertise in the management of patients with complex swallowing and communication disorders on the Acute Stroke Unit.

Lead on the development and delivery of specialist stroke SLT services, contributing to the implementation of national stroke priorities, clinical governance and workforce development.

To access SSNAP reports, and liaise with stroke specialist in regards to reviewing SLT performance, identify gaps and ways to improve efficiency of service in order to deliver all SLT stroke targets, e.g. 72 hour assessment and 45 mins of therapy

To ensure training is delivered to ensure stroke swallow screening targets are met.

To contribute to policy development within the Trust.

To contribute to the Nutrition MDT.

To carry out FEES/videofluoroscopy assessment of acute dysphagic in-patients.

Provide cross-site cover to meet the needs of the wider SLT service when needed.
