Acute Team Lead Speech and Language Therapist

Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated and experienced SLT to lead our acute team. You will be well supported within our friendly team by peers and managers. The post holder will provide specialist assessment and intervention for adults with acquired communication and swallowing disorders across the acute wards. There will also be opportunity to work closely with SLT's in community pathways.

You will play a key role in delivering a high-quality, evidence-based service, taking a lead on development and supporting junior staff and students. This role requires strong clinical leadership, multidisciplinary collaboration, and a commitment to person-centred care. FEES and videofluoroscopy skills preferred, but training can be given in this area if needed. There are opportunities to develop your research skills.

The SLT department is currently undergoing an integration with community services. This will provide exciting opportunities to develop services with patient needs at the core, across traditional boundaries. You will play a key role in shaping the pathway for acute patients.

The postholder is likely to work at the Alexandra Hospital at times and therefore the postholder will need to meet the travel demands of the service.

Main duties of the job

To provide a highly specialist, high standard Speech and Language Therapy service, assessing and advising on patients care & treatment, as an autonomous practitioner working with patients with dysphagia and communication difficulty.

Take a lead in providing instrumental assessment including Fibreoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) and Videofluoroscopy.

Provide clinical supervision and act as a resource to advise SLT staff working with dysphagia and communication difficulty, ensuring that an integrated & successful therapy service is provided.

Work as an integral part of the multidisciplinary team, contributing to team discussions and influencing decisions about patient care programmes, taking on the role of care co-ordinator where appropriate.

Take a lead on the planning, development, co-ordination & evaluation of the Speech and Language Therapy service for dysphagia and communication patients across Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.

Liaise with ward staff in establishing appropriate discharge criteria, co-ordinating relevant patient discharges and ensuring adequate outpatient care and treatment.To deputise for the Operational SLT Manager or SLT/Dietetic Manager when required.

To work flexibly across Worcestershire Community and acute hospitals as required, with provision of cross cover between teams as required (within staff competencies).
